Due to a camera flaw, a variety of Toyota models are being recalled, but so too are Lexus and Subaru models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified that certain Toyota models were more at risk of crashing when in reverse. Models affected range from Toyota models between 2020 and 2026, which feature the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system.

A concern affecting many Toyota models

The recall had been filled on October 30, and as per the large-scale recall where approximately 1,024,704 vehicles were recalled. The concern that initiated the recall was that of a blank or somewhat frozen display on the rearview camera when certain Toyota models were put in reverse.

The fault stems from the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system that guides the driver when reversing. While the PVM is meant to guide drivers while reversing, it is proving to be more hazardous. Not only does this camera flaw pose a risk for drivers, but also for pedestrians and cars behind the affected car.

With so many Toyota models, as well as a few Lexus models and the Subaru Solterra from 2020 to 2026, being affected, this issue needs to be addressed well. Thus far, there have been no reported accidents or injuries due to the issue, but the recall is a precautionary measure to address the issue across new-generation and hybrid models. The recall is necessary to ensure pedestrian safety.

All of the models that have been recalled by Toyota

For drivers to understand if they are affected, they will have to note which vehicles have been recalled as per this massive car recall. The Toyota models that are affected are:

2023–2026 Toyota Crown and Crown Signia

2024–2026 Toyota Grand Highlander and Hybrid

2023–2025 Toyota Highlander, RAV4, and Prius (including Plug-In Hybrids)

2025 Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, and RAV4 Prime

2023–2025 Toyota Mirai and Land Cruiser

Also, affected by this recall are some Lexus models, including:

2023–2025 Lexus ES and ES Hybrid

2024–2025 Lexus GX, LC, and LC Hybrid

2023–2026 Lexus RX and RX Plug-In Hybrid

2024–2026 Lexus TX and TX Hybrid

2022–2025 Lexus NX, LX, and their hybrid variants

The 2023-2025 Subaru Solterra model has also been recalled since it shares the same platform as the Toyota BZ4X, which is also affected by the recall. While all these vehicles were equipped with the driver-assistant system to make the life of the driver easier, the same assistant system is posing a severe risk to the driver and others.

What actions should be undertaken by drivers?

Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru drivers whose cars are affected by the recall are instructed to schedule an appointment at their nearest dealership. Part of the fix entails an upgrade of the parking-assistant software. The software upgrade will assist with the rear camera glitch in these affected vehicles.

Notification of this fault will reach all affected drivers by December 16, but until then, drivers are requested to check their VIN on the manufacturer’s official website. This is not the only massive car recall this year. There were over 500,000 cars recalled over an engine defect.

A recall is meant to initiate action before any injury occurs

This is not the first recall initiated by Toyota and Lexus. A previous recall by Toyota and Lexus saw 174,000 cars being recalled, with every model being affected listed as well. This recall suggests that even a driver-assistant system can be flawed, so drivers must always rely on their instincts as well when driving and reversing. While no injuries or accidents have been noted by Toyota, the necessary precaution needs to be taken immediately.
