They have also taken in roughly a quarter of human carbon dioxide emissions, locking pollution away in deep water that most people never see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Southern Ocean, which circles <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/antarctica-36839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctica<\/a>, is the heavyweight in this hidden story. After that peak, humanity manages something that still sounds ambitious: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/sr15\/chapter\/glossary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">net negative emissions<\/a>, where more CO2 is pulled out of the air than put in, slowly reducing concentrations by about a tenth of a percent each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the air cools, so do the land and the surface of the ocean, including the waters around Antarctica.
