Mexico is racing to finish a new trade route across its narrow southern waist. The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec<\/a> links the Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico along a 303 kilometer railway backed by upgraded ports and industrial parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On paper the idea is simple. Containers leave a ship on one coast, cross the country by train, then board another ship on the other side. With drought and heat already slowing the Panama Canal<\/a>, a land bridge that sidesteps queues and extra fees looks tempting for shipping companies<\/a> and for anyone tired of delayed deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the ecosystems that already live along that rail line, the story is far less tidy. What does that look like on the ground?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The corridor runs through 79 municipalities in Oaxaca and Veracruz, an area described by researchers and the Mexican government as one of the country\u2019s most biodiverse regions. Forest, wetlands and cropland still host a wide range of birds, reptiles and mammals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
