The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers already used about 415 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/energy-efficiency\/energy-efficiency-targets-directive-and-rules\/energy-efficiency-directive\/energy-performance-data-centres_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">global power demand<\/a>, and projects that their electricity use could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/time-running-out-for-america-180000000\/16013\/\">more than double by 2030<\/a> to around 945 terawatt hours, with AI-optimized facilities as the main driver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A typical AI-focused data center can draw as much electricity as 100,000 homes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/new-oil-of-the-century-rises-this-state\/19311\/\">the very largest projects under construction<\/a> are expected to use far more. As the agency itself notes, there is &#8220;no AI without energy&#8221; and that energy has to come from somewhere, whether it is a wind farm or the fossil fuel plant behind your monthly electric bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Security problem, sustainability test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For businesses, the Korean case reads first as a security lesson. Transparent side panels that show off colorful lighting also advertise which machines hold several hundred dollars of RAM in plain view. Specialists now advise locking technical rooms, logging who opens cases and, where possible, choosing less showy enclosures for workstations filled with high-value components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In environmental terms, the same incident should prompt a different question.
