In 2020, the Nobel Prize in Physics honored Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel, and Andrea Ghez for work that helped prove this dim source is indeed a supermassive black hole at the core of our galaxy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see how such giants shape galaxies, astronomers also look far away. Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/big-bang-lost-echo-traced-remote-galaxy\/18764\/\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>, a team including Aaron Romanowsky studied a distant system nicknamed<a href=\"https:\/\/ras.ac.uk\/news-and-press\/research-highlights\/distant-galaxy-mirrors-early-milky-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Sparkler<\/a>, a small galaxy only about three percent as massive as the Milky Way and surrounded by compact globular clusters that resemble a young version of our own halo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A future collision that could feed the black hole<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Large Magellanic Cloud is a dwarf galaxy that now orbits the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/milky-ways-next-stop-in-the-universe\/19149\/\">Milky Way<\/a> at roughly two hundred thousand light years from Earth. Calculations based on its motion suggest it is losing orbital energy and will spiral in to merge with our galaxy in around two billion years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article\/483\/2\/2185\/5181341\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2019 study<\/a> using the EAGLE cosmological simulations found that when galaxies similar to the Milky Way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/infinity-galaxy-collapsing-black-hole\/18611\/\">merge with companions<\/a> like the Large Magellanic Cloud, their central black holes can grow by a factor of several as gas falls inward. Astrophysicist Nathalie Degenaar from the University of Amsterdam explains that this matter can radiate across much of the spectrum, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/ixpe\/milky-ways-central-black-hole-woke-up-200-years-ago-nasas-ixpe-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent observations<\/a> with NASA\u2019s Imaging X ray Polarimetry Explorer have already revealed a smaller outburst from Sagittarius A* about two hundred years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this awakening means for Earth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk of a reawakened black hole can sound like a disaster movie, yet the numbers paint a calmer picture. Professor Carlos Frenk of Durham University stresses that the active galactic nucleus triggered by the future merger with the Large Magellanic Cloud is not expected to be powerful enough to pose a serious threat to life on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph Michail at the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard and Smithsonian notes that twenty six thousand light years may not sound like much on a cosmic map, but it is still a substantial separation.
