Two more Iron Age gold coins have been recovered from the findspot of the Great Baddow Hoard, bringing the total collection to 935 coins.

That makes an already remarkable discovery even more important. First found in 2020 and later acquired by the Museum of Chelmsford, is considered the largest Iron Age gold coin hoard ever recorded in Britain, and it may help explain a tense moment in Britain’s final decades before Roman rule.

A huge find grows again

The original hoard contained 933 gold coins, most of them Eastern British staters of the “Whaddon Chase” type. These small gold pieces date roughly from 60 to 20 B.C., a period when power in southeast Britain was shifting fast.

The new coins were found during a follow-up excavation commissioned by the Museum of Chelmsford and carried out by Archaeology South-East, part of University College London’s archaeology work. The team dug a trench about 6.6 feet square, searching for clues about how the hoard was buried.

Instead, halfway through the work, senior archaeologist Rob Cullum uncovered two more gold staters. Both were identified as the same Whaddon Chase type as most of the original hoard, with a horse design on one side and an abstract wreath-style image on the other.

Why these coins matter

At first glance, a coin is just a coin, but in archaeology, a small object can behave like a witness, especially when hundreds of similar pieces appear in one place.

Most of the Baddow coins are thought to have been produced in a region later linked to the Catuvellauni, while the findspot sits in territory traditionally associated with the Trinovantes. That matters because Roman sources described conflict and pressure among these groups around Julius Caesar’s second invasion of Britain in 54 B.C.

Could the coins have been gathered as tribute for Caesar? Museum specialists say it is one theory, not a settled fact. The hoard may also reflect emergency storage, political transfer, or a ritual act that no one returned to finish.

A gold Whaddon Chase stater from the Great Baddow Hoard in Essex. The coins date from roughly 60 to 20 B.C. and are among the most important Iron Age discoveries ever made in Britain.

Gold, horses, and power

The Whaddon Chase staters were not loose pocket change in the modern sense. They were valuable signals of wealth, influence, and identity.

Their designs were made by hand using engraved dies, which stamped images onto small gold blanks. A stylized horse often appears on one face, while the other carries abstract forms rooted in older continental coin traditions.

That horse is more than decoration. Like a logo on a modern bill or a symbol on a government seal, it helped broadcast authority in a world without newspapers, radio, or road signs telling people who was in charge.

The mystery remains underground

The latest excavation brought good news and one small frustration. The two extra coins were recovered, but the dig and geophysical survey did not reveal a clear container, pit, or landscape feature explaining why the hoard was buried.

Claire Willetts, Curatorial and Exhibitions Officer at the Museum of Chelmsford, said the findspot still has secrets. She noted that the question of why such a large sum was hidden and never retrieved “will remain a great mystery for now.”

That uncertainty is part of the story. Archaeology does not always hand over a neat answer, and sometimes the silence around a discovery is just as revealing as the gold itself.

A warning for treasure hunters

The Great Baddow Hoard also shows why responsible metal detecting matters. The museum says a detectorist who did not have permission originally found the hoard on private land and initially failed to declare the find under the Treasure Act 1996.

Under that law, potential treasure finds in England and Wales must be reported to the coroner within 14 days. The Portable Antiquities Scheme also encourages finders to work with local Finds Liaison Officers so objects can be recorded properly.

Why does that matter? Because the soil around an object can hold the missing details, including whether coins were stored in a vessel, buried in a rush, or placed carefully as an offering. Once that context is disturbed, some of the story is gone.

Heading to public display

The Museum of Chelmsford acquired the original hoard in May 2025 with help from a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £250,000, which is roughly $336,000 using recent exchange rates. Other support came from local heritage and archaeology groups.

Now the full 935-coin collection is set for public display in “Timeless Treasures,” an exhibition at the Museum of Chelmsford running from July 18, 2026, through April 11, 2027. After that, the hoard is expected to move into the museum’s Prehistory Gallery for permanent display.

For visitors, it will be a rare chance to stand near gold that once moved through a world of tribal rivalries, Roman pressure, and local power struggles. Tiny pieces, big questions.

The official press release was published on City Life by Chelmsford City Council.

A field in Great Baddow, Essex, has given archaeologists another glittering surprise.
