They estimated that about 20,500 acres of forest were affected, amounting to nearly 12 percent of the forest cover in that key area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counting the orangutans that may have died<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers overlaid the mapped landslides with estimates of where orangutans were living.
