Small numbers can matter underwater, especially when the difference is getting away or staying too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why bat rays were chosen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bat rays are not random stand-ins for sharks. They belong to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/resource\/educational-materials\/introduction-protected-sharks-and-rays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">elasmobranchs<\/a>, the cartilage-framed group that includes rays, sharks, and skates.
