It passed within 2,864 miles of the surface, gained about 1,000 miles per hour, and tilted its path around the Sun by roughly one degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No extra fuel needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maneuver used Mars\u2019 gravity to put Psyche on course for its main destination, the metal-rich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/chinas-tianwen-2-probe-is-on-its-way-to-asteroid-2016-ho3-a-small-space-rock-that-could-become-a-key-piece-in-the-new-race-to-bring-back-secrets-from-deep-space\/34831\/\">asteroid<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/asteroids\/16-psyche\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psyche<\/a>, which it is expected to reach in 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the flyby wasn\u2019t only about navigation. Why waste a close encounter with Mars?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission team used the opportunity as a full-scale test of the spacecraft\u2019s scientific instruments. Its cameras, magnetometer, and gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer all worked as planned. Psyche also captured a time-lapse showing Mars growing from a thin crescent into detailed close-up views before shrinking away again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A gravity assist without extra fuel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how does a gravity assist actually work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of it a little like catching a moving walkway at an airport. The spacecraft approaches a planet on a carefully planned path, falls through its gravity, and leaves with a different speed and direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s exactly what Psyche did at Mars. The maneuver saved propellant while making the precise course change needed for the long trip ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controllers confirmed the result using radio signals exchanged between Psyche and NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/communicating-with-missions\/dsn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Deep Space Network<\/a>. Those signals showed that Mars had delivered the expected boost and placed the spacecraft on the right route toward the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mars became the practice target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why test asteroid instruments on Mars, a planet scientists already know so well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s actually the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars works almost like a practice exam with an answer key. Scientists already have decades of measurements from orbiters and rovers, so they can compare Psyche\u2019s readings with data they already trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lindy Elkins-Tanton, the mission\u2019s principal investigator at the University of California, Berkeley, said \u201call instruments delivered great results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team wasn\u2019t expecting any huge surprises from such a well-studied planet. Still, the flyby gave the instruments a real-world workout and even added observations from a viewpoint that Mars spacecraft don\u2019t usually get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neutrons put one instrument to work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psyche\u2019s gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer will eventually help scientists figure out which chemical elements make up the asteroid\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds complicated. The basic idea isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov\/science\/toolbox\/cosmic_rays1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cosmic rays<\/a> constantly slam into planets and asteroids. When they hit, they can cause the surface and atmosphere to release neutrons and gamma rays at different energy levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists measure those signals and compare them with the known signatures of different elements. Think of it as reading a chemical fingerprint from far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Psyche\u2019s flyby distance, Mars was too far away for the instrument to detect gamma rays from the planet. But it did pick up the expected increase in neutrons near closest approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Lawrence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhuapl.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory<\/a> said the detector \u201cperformed excellently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the important part. The instrument recognized a real planetary signal before having to do the same job at a far less familiar world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mars tested the magnetometer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psyche\u2019s magnetometer has already spent years measuring the magnetic field carried by the solar wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars offered something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, the instrument detected the magnetic signature of a celestial body. As Psyche approached Mars, it recorded a sharp increase in magnetic activity at the planet\u2019s bow shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picture water building up in front of a moving boat. Mars creates something loosely similar in space, except the \u201cwave\u201d comes from charged particles in the solar wind running into the planet\u2019s magnetic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ben Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said the encounter showed that the magnetometer could handle rapidly changing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful rehearsal. At asteroid Psyche, magnetic measurements could help scientists investigate whether the object contains material left over from the core of an ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/samples-from-the-asteroid-bennu-force-us-to-rethink-the-origin-of-life-nasa-finds-key-compounds-in-rocks-over-4-5-billion-years-old\/30351\/\">planetary building block<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rare views of the Red Planet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cameras got their turn too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psyche approached Mars from an unusual angle, so the planet initially appeared as a narrow, glowing crescent. Sunlight scattered through the dusty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/scientists-detected-a-sudden-burst-of-vapor-on-mars-and-what-is-disturbing-is-that-it-occurred-when-the-water-was-supposed-to-be-safe-underground\/30258\/\">Martian atmosphere<\/a>, making the bright edge stretch farther around the planet than might normally be expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Images taken from May 2 through May 15 were later combined into a time-lapse of the approach, close pass, and departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once Psyche got close, the details started showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its twin cameras photographed wind-streaked craters, the water ice-rich south polar cap, and the huge double-ringed Huygens crater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jim Bell of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.asu.edu\/b\/20260520-nasas-psyche-mission-aces-mars-flyby-targets-metalrich-asteroid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arizona State University<\/a> said the imaging team also spotted Mars\u2019 small moons, Phobos and Deimos, from far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That wasn\u2019t just sightseeing. The team was practicing for a search around asteroid Psyche, where scientists will look for any tiny moons that may be hiding nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"See NASA&amp;apos;s Psyche spacecraft fly by Mars in this amazing time-lapse\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DIYjDLrqvDw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">YouTube: <em>@VideoFromSpace<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why asteroid Psyche matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asteroid Psyche is not your typical rocky destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current estimates suggest metal makes up around 30% to 60% of its volume, mixed with rocky material. But scientists still don\u2019t know exactly what they will find when the spacecraft gets there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The irregular asteroid is about 173 miles wide at its broadest point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest questions is how it formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A leading idea is that Psyche may contain material from the core of a planetesimal, one of the small bodies that helped build the rocky planets early in the solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If so, visiting Psyche could offer scientists something they normally can\u2019t get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A look at material similar to what lies deep inside planets, without having to somehow drill thousands of miles underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spacecraft is expected to spend about two years mapping the asteroid, photographing its surface, studying its composition and gravity, and searching for magnetic clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The next leg to 2029<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psyche launched on Oct. 13, 2023. After the Mars flyby, it is now headed directly toward the asteroid belt and remains on track to rendezvous with its target in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/nasa-says-the-god-of-chaos-asteroid-will-pass-closer-than-many-satellites-in-2029-and-the-rare-flyby-will-be-visible-without-a-telescope\/32014\/\">2029<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the journey\u2019s biggest navigation hurdles is done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flyby also gave nearly every major science instrument a chance to prove itself before the real mission begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bob Mase, the project manager at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said \u201cThe spacecraft is in great shape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psyche is scheduled to resume sustained thrusting with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/solar-electric-propulsion-makes-nasas-psyche-spacecraft-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar-electric propulsion system<\/a> later in 2026.
