Carved from mammoth ivory and discovered in <a href=\"https:\/\/uni-tuebingen.de\/en\/faculties\/faculty-of-science\/departments\/geosciences\/work-groups\/prehistory-and-archaeological-sciences\/ina\/early-prehistory-quaternary-ecology\/research\/excavations\/germany\/hohle-fels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hohle Fels Cave<\/a> in southwestern Germany, these two bird figurines are estimated at 40,000 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About the size of thumbnails, one bird appears to be resting pensively, while the other is in flight or possibly displaying. Researchers can now discuss the species and actions depicted in the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Birds caught in motion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rounded posture and tucked head of the complete figure suggests a bird possibly squatting over eggs. The Aurignacian people (or person) responsible for the artwork form part of early Upper Paleolithic nomads connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/scientists-analyzed-hundreds-of-human-genomes-and-found-dna-from-two-unknown-ancient-groups-a-ghost-lineage-that-split-off-800000-years-ago-and-another-dating-back-1-8-million-years\/35880\/\">humans migrating to Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmu.de\/digitale-sammlung\/objekt\/wasservogel-1977-0119-9000-9000-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water bird<\/a> carving had been discovered prior to these two pieces, giving Hohle Fels three detailed bird depictions unearthed to date. Excavators have found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/for-years-they-were-believed-to-be-the-last-mammoth-bones-until-scientists-discovered-they-were-whales-found-400-kilometers-from-the-coast\/32110\/\">mammoths<\/a>, lions, bears, horses, fish, and bison at other Swabian Jura sites, but no birds.
