In the year 2018, a radar of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Mars_Express_detects_liquid_water_hidden_under_planet_s_south_pole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Space Agency<\/a> found an unusual, bright reflection, located around 0.9 miles below the surface. This could mean that there was a lake of salty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/clear-and-definitive-evidence-of-liquid-water-not-just-ancient-ice-found-on-mars\/25272\/\">liquid water<\/a>, approximately 12 miles wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, a different radar has studied that area, but what it found is not so impressive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-orbiter-shines-new-light-on-long-running-martian-mystery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA\u2019s SHARAD instrument<\/a> only detected a low echo, so this made it less likely to be a body of liquid water, although researchers are still not able to confirm what lies under the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why they believed there was water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conclusion came from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Mars_Express_orbiter_instruments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MARSIS<\/a>, a radar instrument carried by ESA\u2019s Mars Express spacecraft. In an area about 12 miles wide, the radar detected some echoes beneath the ice that were stronger than the ones that came from the surface. On Earth, patterns like this one, generally indicate that there is subglacial water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because liquid water has very different electrical properties from ice and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/the-mystery-of-mars-missing-water-just-got-stranger-scientists-think-part-of-its-ancient-atmosphere-and-moisture-may-have-been-trapped-for-3-billion-years-inside-minerals-on-the-red-planet\/34656\/\">rocks<\/a>, the team believed that the most logical explanation was the presence of salty water, but at the same time, radar evidence is not a photograph or chemical confirmation of a lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">NASA\u2019s radar needed a rare maneuver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/mars-reconnaissance-orbiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter<\/a> has an instrument called SHARAD, which works at a higher frequency than MARSIS. This improved the signal, making it at least ten times stronger, although this was a risky move that could only be made with carefully controlled conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No bright echo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SHARAD managed to reach the base of the ice but just recorded only a very weak return from the possible lake. If there was a flat layer of liquid water, it would have been detected. One possibility is that the ice present above the suspected lake absorbed the high-frequency signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other materials may seem like water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radar brightness does not automatically mean there is one specific material. It could also come from rock, conductive minerals, thin layers, or variations in the amount of ice and dust content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another obstacle is temperature. Beneath the polar cap, temperatures are believed to be below the normal freezing point of water. An explanation for a large underground lake to remain liquid would be if the water were extremely salty or if Mars supplied more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/scientists-have-discovered-that-a-young-region-of-mars-did-not-cool-as-quickly-as-previously-thought-and-that-its-magmatic-system-continued-to-evolve-quietly-for-millions-of-years\/30818\/\">geothermal heat<\/a> than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous surveys also found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/study-looks-more-closely-at-mars-underground-water-signals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bright reflections<\/a> in parts where the ice seemed to be too cold or too shallow for melting. This made researchers think that these \u201cwater\u201d echoes could have another cause. To solve the mystery, scientists will need to carry out repeated observations and better knowledge on how ice affects each signal. MARSIS found a low-frequency reflector which would indicate there is liquid water, while SHARAD registered a weaker high-frequency echo in the same area.
