But because of how much plastic we produce and discard we also have to come up with ways of dealing with the plastic we don\u2019t use anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From water bottles and grocery bags to car dashboards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/a-queensland-couple-keeps-the-plastic-matting-and-drip-tape-that-grew-their-tomatoes-because-australia-recycles-only-7-percent-of-farm-plastic-and-no-truck-will-take-the-rest\/35668\/\">recycling becomes a challenge<\/a> especially because every kind of plastic type has to be separated beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some kinds of plastics are very similar though. By observing this, scientists managed to come up with a new clever laboratory process that can feed 3 of the most common plastics into a single reactor, that then produces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/german-scientists-have-managed-to-convert-up-to-31-3-of-sunlight-directly-into-hydrogen-a-number-that-puts-the-race-for-clean-fuel-from-nothing-but-sun-and-chemistry-on-a-whole-new-level\/34718\/\">hydrogen gas<\/a> that is more than 90% pure. Not only that: it also prevents nearly all direct carbon dioxide emissions by mixing carbon with solid materials in its process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why mixed plastic is so difficult<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a measly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1700782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9 percent<\/a> of discarded plastic is recycled, while up to 79 percent of it goes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/plastic-headed-for-landfills-is-being-turned-into-gasoline-diesel-and-jet-fuel-in-mexico-and-petgas-is-sparking-an-uncomfortable-debate-about-what-recycling-really-means\/32781\/\">landfills<\/a> and 12 percent is burned down, which is not only a waste but also a terrible way of dealing with it due to all the harmful gases it produces. Those are the most common components of the plastics that we use in our daily lives be it bottles, bags, or car parts, but at the same time their chemistry usually makes them hard to process together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning waste into hydrogen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And why is the purity of hydrogen a matter of importance? A united team of scientists from the <a href=\"https:\/\/samueli.ucla.edu\/new-process-turns-mixed-plastic-waste-directly-into-hydrogen-fuel-without-sorting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCLA<\/a> and Ewha Womans University tried a previously known method called \u201calkaline thermal treatment\u201d. Translating to simpler terms it means that the sodium hydroxide when under heat reacts with the plastic and helps with the hydrogen release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This method was conceived out of an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-17627-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon-neutral process<\/a> that turned biomass such as seaweed into hydrogen. While the PETs contain oxygen and respond more readily to the adapted treatment both the PEs and PPs show much more resistance due to their stable chemical structure that does not easily react under the alkaline conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To try and overcome that problem the researchers ingeniously exposed PEs and PPs to a more moderate heat and air before the main reaction took place. The result is that more than 75 percent of the original carbon ends up in stable carbonates or organic liquid residues, and less than 13 percent showed up as pure gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sodium carbonates are not very useful in their original form, but once converted into calcium carbonates they become useful in a wider list of options.
