Each of these trains is controlled through a wireless system that is called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/rail-research.europa.eu\/research-development\/ip2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual coupling<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it is known, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/mexico-pulls-land-based-panama-canal-out-of-its-hat-303-km-across-the-isthmus-tehuantepec-to-connect-the-pacific-and-the-gulf-without-passing-through-locks\/33681\/\">freight corridors are quite congested<\/a>, and with this new system the future for transportation could really change. Baoshen Railway officials say that this type of technology could increase capacity by more than 50 percent. All this can be efficient, but what is the limit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A radio link that became a coupler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The way this technology works is very interesting and striking. Zhang Guozhen, project lead at the <a href=\"https:\/\/qlth.crsc.cn\/news\/tsi_1653_4613_93309.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CRSC Research &amp; Design Institute Group<\/a> expressed that each train \u201cknows\u201d exactly what the rest are doing, not by physical contact\u2026. but by radio waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great example is if the lead train stops, the order or the command is transmitted to the rest of the group in milliseconds. At present day the Baotou-Shenmu Railway handles about 180 million metric tons of freight per year, according to the website Xinhua. As mentioned previously the railway officials calculate that virtual coupling could lift that capacity by more than 50 percent while also avoiding major track or station expansion. Liu Zhaohui of the CHN Energy Baoshen Railway summed up the idea by saying, \u201cThe beauty lies in using intelligence instead of iron.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters beyond the balance sheet though. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/chinas-wild-idea-a-1118-mile-rail-bridge-across-the-gobi-that-dares-gravity-sandstorms-and-basic-common-sense\/33596\/\">Building new rail corridors<\/a> requires more steel, concrete, land and years of construction, so getting more use of already existing infrastructure relieves the pressure on all fronts. Still it is important to take into account that the available data from the tests still do not quantify the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/the-future-of-rail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy savings or CO2 reduction<\/a> per ton of freight moved. So a system that has the ability to change the corridor into one that is more productive will make the movement of more coal easier. Remember that coal is a fossil fuel whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/coal\/coal-and-the-environment.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">combustion releases large amounts of carbon dioxide<\/a> into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you still have doubts, it is important to say that this technology itself does not burn coal. What about the performance in severe weather, unstable communications and long-term reliability?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens next to the virtual coupling technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those with \u201cenvironmental consciousness\u201d there is still something that worries them: the type of freight that will actually be transported and if the technology will actually reduce material use and energy demand rather than just increasing fossil-fuel emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHN Energy states that the high level of coordination these operations have. They reinforce the idea that now the trains will be independent without the need for manual connection.
