They answered saying that the diesel motors just helped to stop, manage in stations and to prevent deterioration.

A 1.2-million-pound machine built for mountains

In the 40s, American Locomotive Company was asked by Union Pacific to build 25 of these locomotives, but with the specific need to cross the Wasatch Mountain in Utah and steep rail corridors in Wyoming for trains with gigantic cargo, something that usually for other trains can be quite difficult and requires them to work in teams. What was amazing about this was that one Big Boy could pull a train with 120 freight cars with 3,800 tons at 40 miles per hour.

Why diesel locomotives traveled behind Big Boy

The company took a “practical decision” by including diesel motors (although of course the Big Boy can work perfectly well alone). These engines actually have a modern system that avoids the old brakes of the Big Boy to deteriorate… They are extremely expensive and difficult to replace.

Read More: Houston built a 26-lane freeway to beat traffic, but the cars came back and exposed the trap behind wider roads

But that is not the only reason. So seeing it passing around is a whole sensorial experience.

Inside the cab, the 1940s are still alive

And this gets even better because as the heritage operations manager Ed Dickens said, everything inside works manually and nothing is automatic. It seems that inside the cabin is like traveling back to 1940. It is at such a level that the crew members need to protect their eyes and ears to work and, of course, to constantly drink water due to the heat of the firebox. The difference (and I guess that is the best thing about it) is that the fuel is no longer coal; now it is Fuel Oil No. 5, but what makes the train move is still the steam generated.

A 7,000-mile trip became a national spectacle

The 2026 journey that started near Central Pacific’s historic Milepost Zero in Sacramento and later moved east ended up being a spectacle and an event that people liked to experience.
