After nearly 70 years of submersible exploration specialists estimate we have observed less than 0.001% of the deep seafloor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That percentage sliver corresponds to roughly the size of Rhode Island. That does not mean the scientists know nothing about the ocean, but it does expose a major blind spot as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/costa-rica-has-just-added-a-ghost-shark-to-its-biodiversity-but-this-one-doesnt-live-on-beaches-or-reefs-it-was-hiding-at-depths-of-between-1280-and-2580-feet-in-the-pac\/34558\/\">deep-sea ecosystems<\/a> draw a growing interest from both science and industry together. How could we study something we can\u2019t even see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Humans have only glimpsed the deep seafloor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have been so focused on studying outer space for so long that we overlooked the ocean, but that is changing. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceandiscoveryleague.org\/press\/press-release-how-little-weve-seen-deep-ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study published in May 2025<\/a> reviewed 43,681 records of submersible dives dating back to 1958 in order to understand what we really know about the deep sea. Most of the data gathered is skewed by the fact that it has been done on specific locations, which means the results can\u2019t even be replicated in other areas. The samples we have are too tiny and the ocean too vast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mapping the ocean is not the same as seeing it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To map the broad shape of the seafloor the scientists have used <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/explainers\/mapping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ship-based sonar<\/a>, gravity models and satellites. Those tools reveal all the different landscapes, from trenches and ridges to underwater plains and mountains, but they are not powerful enough to reveal the details of those habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To see what is really going on down there we have to get closer, and that\u2019s the challenge. A well placed camera near the bottom can capture pictures of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/between-alaska-and-siberia-lies-a-seafloor-abyss-an-underwater-rift-dropping-about-8530-feet-revealing-a-hidden-world-most-people-never-imagine\/33205\/\">coral communities<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/education\/hydrothermal-vents-volcanoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrothermal vents<\/a>, animal behavior, sediment texture, fields of mineral-rich nodules and most likely things we still have to discover. About 67% were made within 200 nautical miles of the United States, Japan and New Zealand. It now sits at the center of debates that include a range of themes: from biodiversity, biotechnology, carbon cycling and climate change to more practical areas such as subsea cables (that are so fundamental to our communications systems), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/scientists-are-still-hunting-for-hard-evidence-of-what-deep-sea-mining-really-does-and-the-fear-is-the-damage-to-fragile-ecosystems-could-outpace-our-ability-to-measure-it\/32612\/\">possible mining<\/a> of mineral-rich abyssal plains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to go further we need more data. Not only visual data, but all kinds of data. How are the chemical measurements? Can we find and study biological samples? What can we find analyzing acoustic data? How about genetic data of species, what can it show us? Images do provide a clear record, but the vastness of data that can be gathered is immense. There\u2019s much that can still be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The physics of deep-ocean exploration are unforgiving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low percentage the study found is not a sign of idleness. New studies are being done but the task is not an easy one. Even a carefully planned dive can take so much time since crossing a tiny patch of seafloor is not the same as walking on the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scientists are asking for changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study calls for broader participation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/the-u-s-wants-to-auction-deep-waters-around-american-samoa-and-the-minerals-lying-up-to-20000-feet-down-could-open-a-new-ocean-fight\/35114\/\">coastal and island nations<\/a> whose waters and knowledge have often been underrepresented in deep-sea research.
