What this type of recycling is doing is basically avoiding them ending up buried in the trash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes, Stena Recycling and Vestas could prove with success that there is a process to separate the materials from the blades. The next step may be applying it on a bigger scale\u2026 Well, science is going on the right path!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why wind turbine blades are so difficult to recycle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first big problem is the size. Some blades, like the ones of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/news\/reports\/extreme-measures-107-meters-worlds-largest-wind-turbine-blade-longer-football-field-heres-looks-like\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GE Vernova\u2019s Haliade-X<\/a> model, for you to have an idea, measure 107 meters. So maybe it can be a nightmare to recycle them, but at least when they are needed, they are safe enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">America\u2019s first major retirement wave is arriving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/emp.lbl.gov\/publications\/us-wind-turbine-database-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States Wind Turbine Database<\/a> registered more than 77,000 turbines working in 2026 and more than 12,000 that were decommissioned. For sure, it is not the most dangerous waste in the world, but it occupies a gigantic space. Also, cutting, moving, and storing the pieces of that size costs a lot of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heat and chemistry are unlocking the trapped materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To solve this situation there are two main possible paths. The first one (that comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/cmei\/systems\/articles\/carbon-rivers-makes-wind-turbine-blade-recycling-and-upcycling-reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessee-based Carbon Rivers<\/a>) consists of heating the waste at high temperatures without oxygen. This way, they can separate the resin and rescue the fibreglass almost clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second path is the Swedish project. Stena Recycling and Vestas say that their method separates the plastic, the fiberglass and the aluminum from the blades. In real life, you need a nearby place for recycling, accessible trucks and buyers available to pay for that recycled fiberglass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laws are also helpful. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/ships-sailing-between-offshore-wind-turbines-face-a-problem-that-barely-existed-a-generation-ago-and-with-thousands-more-giant-towers-heading-to-european-waters-authorities-are-rethinking-how-vessels\/36022\/\">Europe\u2019s wind industry<\/a> prohibited <a href=\"https:\/\/windeurope.org\/news\/where-do-wind-turbine-blades-go-when-they-are-decommissioned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sending the the blades to landfills<\/a> in 2026. WindEurope calculates that the amount of blades for recycling will increase a lot, so the rush to find solutions for these situations is not a theory anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/scientists-painted-one-blade-black-on-wind-turbines-on-a-norwegian-island-and-watched-what-happened-to-white-tailed-eagles-turning-an-almost-ridiculously-simple-visual-change-into-an-experiment-with\/36067\/\">wind power<\/a> is unclean, or that the problem will be solved from the day to the night.
