Its 12 turbines are also providing underwater habitat, with a 2025 monitoring summary reporting marine life using their foundations. The blades are only half the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists had reason to expect this. At Rhode Island\u2019s older Block Island Wind Farm, researchers found increased catches of black sea bass near the turbines, offering a clue to South Fork\u2019s future. But a busy foundation does not automatically mean a healthier ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Twelve towers with an underwater role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Fork has a generating capacity of 132 megawatts and was designed to meet the equivalent electricity needs of roughly 70,000 homes. Those observations document habitat use and survey findings, not a blanket finding of no environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How steel becomes a living surface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Fork\u2019s underwater supports are steel monopiles driven into the seabed. Such&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/engineers-drove-enormous-steel-foundations-directly-into-bare-atlantic-sand-to-hold-offshore-wind-turbines-upright-and-what-happens-around-those-artificial-structures-afterward-is-changing-the-seabed\/36110\/\">hard surfaces<\/a>&nbsp;give mussels, barnacles, and other organisms somewhere to attach, gradually covering bare infrastructure with living communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mussels filter food particles from the water, while the developing community provides resources for other animals. Crabs and fish can find food and shelter around the structures, creating what scientists call an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tos.org\/oceanography\/article\/offshore-wind-farm-artificial-reefs-affect-ecosystem-structure-and-functioning-a-synthesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial reef effect<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/species\/black-sea-bass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black sea bass<\/a>&nbsp;are particularly associated with structured habitat. A turbine foundation can therefore offer something familiar to a fish accustomed to gathering around rocky reefs, even though the structure was built to generate electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Block Island actually showed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completed in 2016, Block Island was America\u2019s first offshore wind farm, with five turbines rather than South Fork\u2019s 12. It became a testing ground for studying how marine life responds to offshore energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/icesjms\/article\/79\/4\/1274\/6555702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seven-year study published in 2022<\/a>&nbsp;compared fish surveys before, during, and after construction with surveys in two reference areas. During the first two operating years, black sea bass catches per unit of fishing effort were approximately ten times higher near the wind farm than in those comparison areas. Those results support a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/an-offshore-wind-farm-in-portugal-became-a-haven-for-octopuses-and-270-other-species-in-just-eight-years-a-data-point-that-reframes-how-energy-and-ocean-life-can-coexist\/33062\/\">local reef effect<\/a>, but they are not proof that every species or fishing business benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More fish nearby does not answer everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are the turbines supporting more fish overall, or mostly drawing existing fish into one place? That distinction between \u201cproduction\u201d and \u201cattraction\u201d matters because a crowded patch of water is not, by itself, evidence of a larger population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broader study published August 27, 2026, examined the available evidence using literature searches completed by December 2024. Its authors found that local changes around wind farms could not yet be reliably translated into conclusions about fish populations across entire regions. The findings highlight a gap in understanding, not a verdict against offshore wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A habitat trade-off, not an empty ocean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The image of an \u201cunderwater desert\u201d can be misleading. Research treats soft seabed as existing habitat that may be replaced, not lifeless space waiting for improvement. Species that use soft sediments do not necessarily gain from replacing their habitat with steel and rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hard structures can also provide stepping stones for nonnative species, while offshore developments can change&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoticias.com\/en\/ships-sailing-between-offshore-wind-turbines-face-a-problem-that-barely-existed-a-generation-ago-and-with-thousands-more-giant-towers-heading-to-european-waters-authorities-are-rethinking-how-vessels\/36022\/\">vessel routes<\/a>&nbsp;and displace fishing activity. These are broader concerns to assess, not impacts established by South Fork\u2019s early reef observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What researchers need to watch next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At South Fork, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfrfoundation.org\/sfwf-acoustic-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation<\/a>&nbsp;is using acoustic tracking to compare how fish and crustaceans use a turbine foundation and a natural rocky reef. Its tracking schedule extends through 2026, with black sea bass, Atlantic cod, lobsters, and crabs among the target species.
