The 10-page guide, dated January 2026, turns lessons from that rural road into practical instructions for future accidents. But its message is not simply to close the road and wait, because saving bees<\/a> also means getting equipment, expertise, and insurance decisions in place before delays become dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rural road became a recovery site<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rollover happened around 4 a.m. on Weidkamp Road, where sheriff\u2019s deputies, public works crews, and bee specialists responded. The driver was uninjured, and shortly after 9 a.m., hives came off the truck and released the insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities closed the road and asked people to stay at least 200 yards away while beekeepers worked to restore the hives. More than two dozen beekeepers joined the effort, and Weidkamp Road reopened on the afternoon of May 31, roughly a day and a half after the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bee count needed a correction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early reports put the number of bees at 250 million, a figure authorities later withdrew. On May 31, the Whatcom County Sheriff\u2019s Office said an on-site beekeeper estimated the total was closer to 14 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you to those who challenged the math and helped us get closer to the true number,\u201d the office said. That distinction still matters, because the revised figure was an estimate of the bees involved, not a verified count of those successfully rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why patience was part of the rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why leave scattered hive boxes nearby rather than clear everything immediately? Responders wanted to give the bees 24 to 48 hours to regroup around their queens, while experienced beekeepers<\/a> restored places for them to gather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is biology behind that approach, although it is no guarantee of recovery. Penn State explains that queen honeybees produce chemical signals that attract workers<\/a>, which gather around the queen and spread those signals through the colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But patience and neglect are different things. Washington\u2019s agriculture department<\/a> says delayed cleanup was an issue in the Whatcom incident, and it now urges commercial beekeepers to discuss accident documentation and recovery requirements with insurers before a spill happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the 10-page plan changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The guide recommends protective equipment, controlled access, and expert help for recovering damaged hives. It also warns that stranded colonies can overheat, so a response that works on a cool rural road may not suit a truck stopped in summer heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Destroying bees should happen only when the risk to public health and safety is \u201cimmediate and high,\u201d the document says. It also identifies the driver or trucking company as likely responsible for cleanup, while calling for coordination with hive owners and insurers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Washington State Department of Agriculture credits its Pollinator Health Task Force\u2019s managed-pollinator subcommittee with developing the plan, assisted by emergency personnel and bee-spill responders from Michigan and Mississippi. The aim is to give the next crew a starting point rather than leave everyone improvising beside a damaged trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why beehives travel by truck<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These colonies were part of an agricultural business that depends on moving bees between flowering crops. USDA research<\/a> describes commercial beekeepers hauling colonies more than 1,000 miles to provide pollination services, with some trips to California almond orchards exceeding 2,000 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes the connection to everyday groceries fairly direct. Before fruit or nuts reach a shopping cart, rented bee colonies may already have traveled across several states to help pollinate the crop<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u2019s 2025 registry included an estimated 127,500 hives, according to the guide. A typical trailer carrying 400 or more hives can represent around $250,000 in value, so clearing the wreckage also means protecting someone\u2019s livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lesson other states are taking seriously<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wisconsin has developed its own bee-spill response plan through its agriculture department and the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association. In a June 2025 announcement, the association said the guidance had been shared with more than 800 local fire departments and county emergency management departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
