For American engineer Tommy Thompson, it became the beginning of a legal battle that kept him behind bars for more than 11 years before his release on March 4, 2026, at age 73.

His team located the SS Central America in 1988, recovering gold from a ship lost during a hurricane in 1857. But disputes over the proceeds, followed by his failure to obey court orders, led to years of confinement without resolving what happened to 500 gold coins.

Why he went to jail

The immediate road to prison began with a missed court appearance. Ordered to attend an August 2012 hearing about money and missing coins, he failed to appear and became a fugitive.

Federal marshals arrested him on January 27, 2015, at a hotel in Boca Raton, Florida. He and his companion had been staying under false names and paying cash, and authorities seized more than $425,000.

He pleaded guilty to criminal contempt that April and received a two-year sentence in December 2015. That sentence punished his failure to appear, but a separate civil contempt order would keep him confined much longer.

The missing coins

What exactly was the court trying to recover? The disputed pieces were 500 commemorative coins minted from recovered shipwreck gold, an important distinction from original coins that had spent more than a century underwater.

Reports at the time valued them at about $2.5 million. That historical estimate should not be treated as a verified price today, or confused with the value of the much larger treasure recovered from the wreck.

Thompson maintained that the coins had gone to a trust in Belize and that he did not know their location. In a 2020 hearing, he said, “I feel like I don’t have the keys to my freedom.”

Why the confinement lasted

Civil contempt works differently from a fixed criminal sentence. In this case, imprisonment was intended to make him comply with orders to help identify and recover assets, with release possible if he cooperated.

His lawyers challenged the confinement using a federal law that caps detention for certain uncooperative witnesses at 18 months. A 2019 appeals ruling rejected that argument because his obligations extended beyond answering questions to actions such as authorizing access to a trust.

On January 31, 2025, U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley ended the civil confinement, concluding that more time was unlikely to secure cooperation. The daily $1,000 penalty had reached $3,335,000, and the previously suspended criminal sentence began, so freedom did not come immediately.

A fortune with competing claims

The financial dispute involved more than the missing coins. Investors sued in 2005, while members of the recovery team also pursued claims that they had never received their promised shares.

Court records describe agreements tied to net recovery or profits, alongside expensive litigation and debts. Recovering valuable gold was a technical success, but calculating who should receive the money became a separate struggle.

The figures themselves require care. A 2000 letter from Thompson’s lawyer, reproduced in an appeals ruling, disputed newspaper reports of a $50 million payment and described roughly $43 million used to settle claims, illustrating why a reported sale figure cannot simply be treated as personal profit.

The ship beneath the story

Long before the lawsuits, the SS Central America carried passengers and California Gold Rush wealth toward New York. On September 12, 1857, it sank during a hurricane, killing 425 people, including Captain William Lewis Herndon.

Passengers and crew had tried to bail out the flooding vessel after water disabled its steam-powered machinery. Women and children were transferred to another ship, but hundreds of people remained aboard as the situation became hopeless.

The cargo included commercial gold shipments and gold carried by passengers. Its loss added to fears during the developing Panic of 1857, a financial crisis already shaking confidence in banks.

How the wreck was found

More than a century later, the search depended on historical research and engineering. In a 1992 study, mathematician Lawrence D. Stone of Metron described using historical accounts and probability calculations to build a map of likely wreck locations.

This approach, known as Bayesian search, combines evidence while allowing for uncertainty. Think of searching for lost keys by weighing where you last saw them and where you have already looked.

The wreck lay more than a mile beneath the Atlantic, far beyond ordinary scuba diving. A remotely controlled vehicle named Nemo, equipped with cameras and robotic arms, allowed the team to inspect the seabed and retrieve objects.

Finding gold was only the beginning

Even the successful search was less straightforward than a treasure-map story might suggest. A later technical review explained that the wreck lay in an area assigned relatively low probability, and credited the decision to finish the planned survey.

The expedition established where a ship had sunk, while the later court proceedings struggled to establish where recovered wealth had gone. The official sentencing announcement was published by the U.S. Department of Justice. www.justice.gov

Image: J.
