The species had been missing from the state since 1914.

The return began on Dec. 12, 2017, when a female tapir named Eva was moved into a fenced pen at the reserve. A study published online in Oryx on March 30, 2026, led by Matheus Agles of the Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro and Refauna, found that the first 14 tapirs released there grew steadily more like wild ones.

A family farm became a reserve

The reserve grew out of the old Fazenda do Carmo, which Hilmar Werner, the great-grandfather of Nicholas Locke, bought in 1907. It farmed crops, sold hardwoods and made cachaça, a sugarcane spirit.

The nonprofit Associação Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu, or REGUA, followed in 2001 and made its first land purchase from the Locke family. Nicholas Locke is the reserve’s president, and his wife, Raquel Locke, is vice president.

The Atlantic Forest now covers just 12.4 percent of its original extent, according to figures cited in the Oryx paper.

One million seedlings in the ground

REGUA says it has led one of the most significant forest restoration programs in Rio de Janeiro state since 2005. By February 2025, its longtime partner World Land Trust counted 840,000 trees and 1,500 acres (607 hectares) back under forest.

In December 2025, the reserve announced the 1 million mark, saying new fragments of native forest are taking shape on former pasture and eroded land. It puts its work at more than 580 hectares (1,430 acres) restored and 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres) of forest protected.

The same hillside at the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve seen from the air in June 2021, top, and June 2024, bottom. (Photo: REGUA Archive)

All 52 staff members each planted one seedling at the celebration. “Reforestation is more than planting trees,” said Aline Damasceno, REGUA’s forest engineer, who has worked on the region’s restoration for 20 years. Nicholas Locke credited “a collaborative network built over two decades” of partners, researchers, volunteers and local residents.

Rangers collect most of the seeds in the forest. The nursery can raise up to 100,000 seedlings a year, REGUA says, and up to 180 tree species, according to World Land Trust.

Other places have regreened in very different ways, like Niger’s farmland regrown from living stumps.

Tapirs had been gone since 1914

Hunting and habitat loss erased tapirs from Rio de Janeiro state. The last confirmed record dates to 1914, in Serra dos Órgãos National Park.

The study authors describe Tapirus terrestris as the largest land mammal in Brazil and a survivor of the Neotropical megafauna. The species is listed as Vulnerable. Its Asian cousin is worse off, with barely 2,500 Malayan tapirs left in the wild.

The releases are led by Refauna, a group that returns native animals to Rio’s emptied forests. It started planning for tapirs in 2012. The Laboratory of Ecology and Management of Wild Animals at the Federal Institute of Rio de Janeiro helps coordinate, according to the reserve.

In early September 2025, a new pair arrived from the Trijunção Wildlife Centre in Bahia for release into the Mosaico Fluminense, a chain of linked parks and reserves.

By that October, REGUA had counted eight calves born in the reserve, which it called “a remarkable indicator of success.” Refauna’s own video that month gave slightly different numbers: 22 free-living tapirs across about 39 square miles (100 square kilometers), and nine calves born in the wild.

Refauna’s video on its lowland tapir reintroduction at the Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve, in Portuguese. Video: Refauna

Captive habits faded after release

The 14 tapirs, seven males and seven females, were born in captivity and came from six Brazilian zoos and breeding centers, aged 1.2 to 19.9 years. Each spent an average of 88.3 days in a 2.2-acre (0.88-hectare) pen with a small lake, getting extra food while it learned to forage.

Cameras at 38 trail points logged 8,680 tapir records over 4 years, 2,565 of them inside the pen. Three females and one male died during the study.

Wild tapirs are mostly active at dusk and at night, while captive ones grow used to keepers and daytime feeding. In the pen, 36 percent of activity happened in daylight. Thirty months after release, it was 17 percent, and five of the six groups made the shift.

The number of active hours stayed the same while the timing changed, and the authors say the shift from captivity “was reversed in a relatively short time” once the animals were free-living.

Heat and dogs played a part. In the hot, wet months from October to April the tapirs moved more at night, and the authors suggest that dogs, which chase wildlife by day, may have disturbed them in daylight.

Old habits carry risks. The team warns that captive routines may lead reintroduced tapirs to look for people, raising the risk of roadkill and run-ins with domestic dogs, and suggests that feeding at dusk in zoos could help.

Gardeners of the forest

Refauna calls tapirs the gardeners of the forest. They gulp down fruit, walk long distances and drop the seeds as they go. Because of their size, Refauna says, they can spread bigger seeds than birds and bats can.

REGUA says research is under way on the tapirs’ seed dispersal, spatial ecology and other ecological interactions. In Spain, researchers found that even Iberian lynx spread seeds.

The wetland where the tapirs were reintroduced is itself restored land. According to World Land Trust, it was turned into pasture and farmland in 1982, and REGUA began restoring it in 2002. Over 220 bird species have now been recorded there, and the charity says the new habitat proved ideal for lowland tapirs.

What the counts do not show yet

One million is a count of seedlings planted. REGUA’s announcement does not say how many of them are still alive.

The camera study ended in February 2022 and covered only the first 14 tapirs, so the authors treat the animals’ adaptability as an indicator of short-term success.

Refauna is aiming for at least 50 tapirs living free, a viable population that REGUA expects to spread over time into Três Picos State Park and other nearby forest. The full study was published in Oryx.

People downstream depend on this forest too. REGUA says the upper Guapi-Macacu watershed supplies water to millions of people in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region.

Photo: Refauna Project / REGUA

A restoration project at Brazil’s Guapiaçu Ecological Reserve, in Cachoeiras de Macacu in Rio de Janeiro state, has planted 1 …

[3

post-52371","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-environment","resize-featured-image
["GET
