On his second night, with the barn left open, he chose to sleep outside under the stars.

The trip took 2½ days and covered roughly 1,000 miles (1,615 kilometers). The next morning, Scott Blais, co-founder of Global Sanctuary for Elephants, the U.S. nonprofit behind the Brazilian sanctuary, was filming at the barn gate when Sandro headed into Yard 3 in about 5 seconds, faster than Blais expected.

A circus calf, then 44 years in Sorocaba

The sanctuary’s rescue page says Sandro was captured in Asia in 1971 as a baby. He went first to the Cauberg zoo in the Netherlands, then came to Brazil with the Orlando Orfei circus. Sorocaba says he reached its Quinzinho de Barros Municipal Zoo on August 18, 1982, at about age 10. A female named Haisa arrived in 1995, and after she died on November 18, 2020, he was alone.

The nonprofit says he spent 16 hours a night in a barn section “only inches taller than he was.” A prosecutor recommended moving him in 2020, and the zoo fought it in court. On August 28, 2026, the group announced that a three-judge panel had unanimously ruled the sanctuary the best place for him, though the city kept appealing.

Three cameras, a crane and a blocked road

The crate went into his enclosure on September 11, and Sandro stepped inside within minutes of having access, the team reported. On September 16, a crane and a flatbed truck came before dawn. The city says the crate doors were shut only after Sandro walked in on his own. Protesters blocked the road out, and security escorted the convoy through.

Blais said the crane was the largest the team had ever needed, and three cameras let them watch Sandro from behind, from the front and while he ate. The team does not sedate elephants for transport. Some people in Sorocaba were alarmed by two days on the road for a 54-year-old elephant, but Blais noted that his team had driven six days with older elephants, including Pocha and Ramba. “There’s no data to support those arguments,” he said.

He also praised Sergio, the zoo caregiver who helped Sandro get used to the crate while protesters shouted at him. Moving large captive animals is rarely smooth, as the first rescue trip for 30 belugas left at a closed marine park also showed.

A first night under the stars

When the truck reached the sanctuary on September 18 and the crate door opened, Sandro had his feet on the ground in under 30 seconds, by Blais’s count. “I blinked. It was out,” Blais said. Soon Sandro was throwing dirt, his ears flapping in what Blais described as a relaxed, content way.

Sandro stands in the open doorway of his transport crate. (Photo: Global Sanctuary for Elephants)

The barn stayed open on his second night, and Sandro slept outside instead. On September 20, Blais said it took about half an hour to find him in the bushes of Yard 3 that morning, before Sandro came out to eat a watermelon.

Sandro is the first male to live at the sanctuary. His habitat covers about 13 acres (5 hectares) in three yards, with troughs, a mud wallow and a pond. Within days he was grazing on his own and walking up, down and sideways on the hills. On October 9, the team reported that he had knocked down his first little tree, and around then he let out a soft, deep rumble at a night feed, another first.

Sandro with the first small tree he toppled at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. Video: Global Sanctuary for Elephants

Weak legs, sore feet and unknown teeth

The good days come with a long medical list. On his profile page, the nonprofit calls Sandro a geriatric elephant with “apparent health issues that have never been adequately investigated,” and says his back right foot is of particular concern. Blais pointed out pops and catches in his hips and knees, and said his legs lack the muscle they should have after the environment he lived in.

Nobody knows how many teeth Sandro has, so for now his hay is chopped fine and his vegetables come cooked or chopped. At the zoo, the city says, he ate 551 pounds (250 kilograms) of food a day in five meals. On October 12, the sanctuary wrote that he has several hundred pounds to gain.

Exams have to wait for trust. His zoo staff put food in his trunk but did not touch him, the sanctuary wrote on September 25. Training relies on positive reinforcement, rewarding him, often with food, for stepping forward or lifting a foot. Older elephants can relearn routines, as a study in which 16 Asian elephants in Thailand dropped a habit that no longer worked found, though older ones took longer. By October 1, caregivers could touch him and he stood calmly in the treatment chute.

Neighbors he can smell but not touch

The female elephants Bambi, Maia and Guillermina caught his scent within days, and on September 21 caregivers filmed them walking with their trunks in the air. He will not share a yard with them. Most are elderly and frail and could be badly hurt if he tried to mount one, the sanctuary wrote in its October 5 update, so for now he can smell and hear them and communicate if he chooses.

He is also alone in a bigger sense. Blais said Sandro is the only male Asian elephant at the sanctuary and the only one he knows of in South America. Wild bulls roam far, as a GPS collar on a young bull elephant in Zambia showed.

What nobody can promise yet

Nearly everything known about Sandro’s first weeks comes from the sanctuary, which is also raising money for his care. It has not released blood tests or a full exam.

Sorocaba sees his past differently. In a September 17 statement, the city said he got special care as an older animal and was monitored under animal welfare protocols. It had asked a court to suspend the transfer.

Recovery after years in a small space is never certain. Still, a bear raised in a tiny cage started hibernating again once it had room and time. “Let them show you how amazing they are,” Blais said on Sandro’s first morning.

The account of Sandro’s move and first weeks was published by Global Sanctuary for Elephants in blog posts and livestreams from September 13 to October 15, 2026.

Photo: Global Sanctuary for Elephants

Sandro, an Asian elephant of about 54, walked out of his transport crate at Elephant Sanctuary Brazil in Chapada dos …

[3

post-52422","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-environment","resize-featured-image
["GET
