One state will send $500 checks ― See payment date and eligibility

Bad news for Social Security beneficiaries ― No payment today for this reason

This state will be sending out once-off checks. Check to see if you qualify. With the tax season officially concluding in April, the majority of citizens across the state should have received their tax rebates. However, individual states are still releasing their own rebates for their residents as part of their policies to return surplus funds to residents once tax season has concluded. These payments come at a time when citizens across the nation are struggling with increased cost-of-living, new tariffs, and inflation.

Stimulus checks help to encourage spending

Usually, once-off rebates, otherwise known as stimulus checks, are distributed during times of low economic downturn and spending. By sending stimulus checks to eligible recipients, it not only helps individuals to cope with imminent expenses, but also aids in preventing a recession from occurring by encouraging recipients to spend money and stimulate activity in the economy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, stimulus checks played a critical role in supporting families during a period of mass job loss, with unemployment statistics reaching highs not seen since the Great Depression. Between March 2020 and March 2021, the Biden Administration released three rounds of stimulus payments, known as Economic Impact Payments (EIPs), in order to assist families with offsetting unexpected expenses related to the pandemic. The last of these unclaimed EIPs was distributed during the most recent tax season.

Citizens from this state qualify for a $400

While no federal stimulus check or payment has been confirmed since the COVID-19 EIPs, individual states have been soldiering on with their own one-time payment initiatives. If you call yourself a resident of Virginia, you are soon to be in luck, with the state preparing to send out new one-time tax rebates worth up to $400 for eligible individuals.

“My friends, there is no reason to raise taxes on Virginians. We are running surplus after surplus after surplus.” said Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin at the 2025 Budget Presentation

According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, the rebates are intended for those Virginians who have a state income tax liability to pay for the year 2024. Individual files can receive up to $200 worth of rebates, while married couples filing jointly can receive up to $400. To be eligible to receive the rebate, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must have filed your Virginia state income tax returns by November 3, 2025
  • The rebate amount cannot be worth more than your actual state tax liability after all deductions and credits are applied. For example, if a single filer owes $150 in Virginia income tax, their rebate will be limited to that amount rather than the full $200

More once-off payments coming your way

If you are not from Virginia, there are other opportunities across the nation for you to claim your share of a once-off payment. In New York state, the government has been releasing a variety of stimulus payments to its citizens, most recently a one-time inflation rebate.

To qualify for this New York state-specific initiative, you must meet the following criteria:

  • File Form IT-201 for 2023 (New York State Resident Income Tax Return)
  • Your 2023 income must fall below a certain threshold, depending on your filing status
  • You cannot already be claimed as a dependent on another return

The checks are set to be distributed by mid-October for eligible New Yorkers. If you filed Form IT-201 for 2023 for the tax year, you do not need to take any additional action to receive your payment. If you are a married couple filing jointly and make less than a combined total household income of $150,000, you will qualify to receive the full $400 inflation payment. If you are a single filer and make less than $75,000, you will qualify to receive a maximum payment of $200.
