Chinese electrical vehicle manufacturer BYD has been on the rise. Since 2022, they have overtaken American electrical engine and vehicle developer Tesla in terms of total global electric vehicle sales. Not only does the company offer affordable entry-level electric vehicles, but its technology is robust and sophisticated, including advanced autonomous technology. The company recently unveiled its latest hybrid engine design last year, showcasing continued advancement of its technology.
BYD overtakes Tesla in vehicle sales
Tesla has long been seen as the dominant pioneer in terms of electric vehicle technology. Since the release of their first model in 2008, the Roadster, the company has continued to push the boundaries of electrical vehicle technology, turning it into not only a luxury design but also pushing other automobile companies to develop their own electrical vehicle designs and models if they want to remain competitive.
However, BYD has exponentially accelerated and grown to overtake Tesla in terms of global dominance of electric vehicles seen on the road. One of the biggest successes of BYD has been its ability to offer electric vehicles at entry-level prices while still offering advanced engines. The cheapest electric BYD vehicle begins at just under $8,000, while the most affordable Tesla option on offer starts at $42,000.
New revolutionary technology from BYD
Last year, in a showcase of their continued innovation and engine developments, BYD unveiled a new hybrid powertrain that is capable of traveling more than 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) without recharging or refueling. This was a significant milestone for electrical vehicle technology, as one of the biggest deterrents for consumers when it comes to making the switch from an internal combustion engine to electrical vehicle technology is the concern regarding the range of the vehicle and the limited charging infrastructure readily available.
One year on from when the powertrain was first released, the technology has been incorporated into a variety of their models, including the Qin L and the Seal 06. The hybrid engine, which makes use of both electric and gas as a power source, highlights the company’s continued commitment to advancing the capabilities of both fully electric and hybrid vehicles— the latter of which is the most popular alternative engine seen on the road in terms of total global units sold.
New advanced technology from BYD
On top of their competitive electric engines, BYD has also been pushing and developing its autonomous driving technology. Autonomous vehicle technology is set to become the next step for the passenger vehicle world, with alternative engine technology currently at its most competitive and saturated it’s ever been since electrical engines first began to rise in popularity.
Tesla has been moving towards repivoting their interests towards this in the next phase of the company’s journey. Currently, the company offers semi-autonomous technologies: Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised). However, an alert and attentive driver is still needed to be present.
Tesla will need to fight for dominance in this sphere, however, with BYD, which has not only released autonomous vehicle technology that rivals and some would say is superior to Tesla’s, but also includes it in all of BYD’s vehicles at no additional cost.
“[We are] starting an era where autonomous driving is for everyone,” described BYD Founder Wang Chuanfu.
Not to be phased, Tesla has already begun testing of their Robotaxi project in Austin, Texas, a ride-hailing service which is intended to be fully autonomous, relinquishing the need for a driver. The pilot program rolled out in June of this year and currently operates in a limited zone for Tesla employees to catch a ride to work. Tesla moved their headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, in 2021, with one suspected reason for the change being thanks to Texas’ more lax laws on autonomous driving.
