We are constantly seeing innovative engines and fuels for cars, with approaches as different as methanol and ammonia. But what about the rest of the vehicles? A legendary Japanese manufacturer has just created the first motorcycle engine that runs on an unpublished fuel (and one that was almost unknown to this sector). The result? An unprecedented power, a skyrocketing range and only water vapor, as well as a futuristic design that leaves no one indifferent.

Recently, Kawasaki has fabricated a supercharged hydrogen fueled engine that is known as the H2 engine with the new combustion system. Said engine includes a high pressure direct injection system that enables efficient combust of the hydrogen fuel. Kawasaki also has added a supercharger to its design in order to increase the power in utilizing the H2 engine.

Kawasaki has not ensured full performance specifications of the H2 engine; however, some facts are available. The engine is expected to generate more than 200 horsepower, this is way beyond what the most common hydrogen engines can deliver. Kawasaki also says that they intend to take the H2 beyond 200-miles-per-hour, proving that it is a performance machine.

Also, the range extender also comes with a large engine capacity that can deliver over 300 ranges of driving through a single tank of hydrogen fuel. Thus, Kawasaki has been toying with the hydrogen engine of the H2 for several years with the view to commercialize them in the near future.

Currently, a concept version of the H2 was introduced already in the frame of the 2024 Tokyo Motor Show, but its performance features have been also demonstrated. Kawasaki is currently development of H2 engine and the firm aims at producing this engine and taking it to the market in the next two to three years.

Are there plans for the commercialization of the first hydrogen motorcycle engine? What we know

Kawasaki H2 engine commercialization depends on the further development of the hydrogen infrastructure, and it is impossible to separate both. Whether hydrogen fueling stations will be there when hydrogen cars will be in abundant use is also going to play a crucial role in global shift towards clean energy and sustainable transportation.

This infrastructure is well understood by Kawasaki, and they are participating in policy dialogue with government bodies, energy providers and other market participants with the aim of development of the hydrogen infrastructure. The firm is not only aspiring to build the H2 engine, but also to contribute to the advancement of the hydrogen mobility chain.

In the foreseeable future, as hydrogen becomes more available within the wide vehicle population, the Kawasaki H2 engine can be advantageous in the conversion to environmentally friendly transport. Due to the engine’s high performance, it is applicable in a broad range of vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, and big transport solutions, given its hydrogen operation.

This first hydrogen motorcycle engine is another step towards zero-emission mobility in a vehicle that still runs almost entirely on gasoline. Electrification has not succeeded, not even among the most recognized brands on the planet, which leads us to ask ourselves: Are motorcycles suitable to become EVs? Maybe FCEVs are the way of the future, and we have been wrong for years about what would happen on the roads.
