These new stimulus checks will arrive for select families soon. Stimulus checks are generally reserved for one-time payments by both local and federal governments as a response to identified economic challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, stimulus checks played an important role in providing immediate economic relief for families and individuals amidst widespread job loss and unemployment. Today, individual states continue to release their own stimulus check initiatives to financially assist their residents.
Stimulus checks provide immediate economic relief
When stimulus checks are distributed by authorities, they are generally intended to encourage economic spending during periods of economic downturn in order to encourage spending activity as a means to prevent a recession. These periods of low economic activity are usually defined by periods of economic instability, particularly when cost-of-living rises unexpectedly.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of citizens lost their jobs unexpectedly, with unemployment statistics reaching heights not seen since the great depression. This prompted the Biden Administration to release three rounds of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) in order to offer immediate financial relief to residents who were facing mounting expenses with no source of income.
This past tax season was the last chance for eligible beneficiaries to claim the third and final EIP, amounting to $1,400. While no other widespread once-off stimulus check initiative has been confirmed by the federal government, there are talks of a new $600 rebate credit to be introduced for next year’s tax season. Referred to as the American Workers Rebate Act (and still in the proposal phase), the legislation has been proposed in light of the recently implemented tariffs this year. Income limits would be enforced to be eligible to receive the $600 rebate, with the following propositions suggested:
- Individual filers must earn below $75,000 annually.
- Heads of households must earn below $112,500.
- Couples filing jointly who earn under $150,000 would be eligible for the full rebate.
$725 stimulus check arriving for these individuals
While it is yet to be confirmed if the American Workers Rebate Act will be passed into law, other states are continuing to send their own stimulus checks to economically vulnerable citizens, with some piloting new stimulus check projects to investigate their effectiveness and feasibility.
One such state doing so is California through its Family First Economic Support Pilot Program. (FFESP). The program provides $725 per month for participating families in order for the California government to investigate the feasibility of a guaranteed income program in the state. On top of the monthly payments, participating families also have access to financial planning services.
In order to be eligible for the pilot project, recipients had to have been the main caregiver of a child under the age of five years old, as well as reside within specific zip code areas in Sacramento County. 200 applicants were randomly selected earlier in the year, with selected beneficiaries receiving payments on the 15th of each month from August of this year until July 2026.
Striving towards a more equal society
The FFESP is one way in which local governments are striving for ways to create a more equal and equitable society. The program was designed specifically for applicants who earn less than 200% of the federal poverty line, with applicants playing a critical role in highlighting to lawmakers ways in which they can best assist low-income families.
Social support programs such as these ensure that all members of society, no matter their income level, have access to basic resources and that families can provide for their young children. By striving for a more equal society through equitable measures such as these, governments can reduce the gap between the wealthy and the poor, creating opportunities for upward mobility and economic stability, and fostering long-term societal stability and growth.
