Spain will produce this new type of gas: it will surprise you
Catalonia announces 46 million euros in aid for the implementation of biogas plants. This is the first call for aid under the Catalan biogas strategy, which will allocate 46 million euros to this type of plant. It will be implemented in small and medium-sized farms as a priority.
The objective is to reach 80 million euros over the next 5 years, and with the following calls for proposals it is expected that 80 new facilities will be created, reaching 150 by 2030. At present, there are 72 plants in operation, including landfills, treatment of sewage sludge, municipal and industrial organic waste, co-digestion and livestock manure.
The aim is to revalorize livestock manure and organic waste to obtain biogas and use it for the production of heat, electricity or biomethane, and biofertilizers. This is the first call for proposals as part of the Catalan biogas strategy for Catalonia 2024-2030.
Catalonia becomes a reference in Spain for this gas
Elisenda Guillaumes explained that by promoting biogas “we are turning the treatment of livestock manure into an opportunity to generate green energy and a value-added product such as fertilizers. Biogas is an opportunity for the sector and for the country, since we are in a moment of transition that we must know how to take advantage of”, according to Energías Renovables.
What is biogas?
“Biogas is a mixture of gases that arises from the decomposition of organic matter from municipal solid waste. We refer to putrescible compounds or biowaste from the organic fraction of human solid waste”, was the explanation that Marcelo Rosso, manager of New Technologies and Environmental Control of CEAMSE, gave to Infobae.
He added: “We can say that the generation of energy from biogas has two main processes: degassing and collection and the generation process itself. It can be produced through two different processes. By aerobic decomposition that is carried out in a sanitary landfill or anaerobic decomposition that is produced when you subject that mass to a biodigestion process in built industrial plants”.
CEAMSE is an entity that promotes environmental restoration through waste management and environmental protection.
