Inflation refund checks

New Yorkers can expect to receive their inflation refund checks throughout this month; however, you may need to follow these two steps to claim it. The backend of the year has seen New York authorities release a variety of stimulus and rebate payments to eligible beneficiaries. While some of these payments pertain to well-established programs, others are new one-time initiatives that authorities have released in response to acutely identified circumstances.

Inflation refund checks and more are being distributed by New York

Stimulus payments are generally reserved to be release on a once-off basis, in response to a particular need. These generally occur during a period of low economic activity in order to encourage increased spending by consumers to mitigate the risks of a recession occurring. Additionally, stimulus payments are the most direct way for local governments to provide immediate financial assistance for residents. While they do not offer a long-term solution for a financial crisis, they do alleviate financial stress temporarily while a more sustainable intervention is implemented.

On top of the inflation refund checks, New York authorities have been underway with distributing a variety of stimulus payments and tax rebates during this time of the year. One of the most well-known payments currently going out to eligible beneficiaries includes those from the School Tax Relief (STAR) program. STAR provides eligible homeowners with tax rebates on their property taxes.

Additionally, authorities recently announced the distribution of emergency aid amounting to $65 million. This comes with the current ongoing federal government shutdown, which has meant that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries are unable to receive their benefits this month due to insufficient funds available. In response to this, New York has needed to redirect state funds to food banks and other local food assistance programs to help feed the three million New Yorkers who receive SNAP benefits.

Follow these two steps to receive your inflation rebate check

The New York Department of Taxation and Finance began to distribute its once-in-a-lifetime inflation rebate checks at the end of September. These payments are worth up to $400 to assist eligible beneficiaries in offsetting the associated costs with the increase in sales tax due to inflation. Payments will continue to be distributed throughout this month.

However, if your check was lost or stolen, you must follow these two steps to ensure that you are compensated:

  1. Contact the Personal Income Tax Information Center at 518-457-5181. Make sure that when you call, you have your most recent tax return with you.
  2. Fill out the following forms, provided that your check was not cashed before you called to report it missing: DTF-32 and DTF-36.

Eight million New Yorkers are expected to benefit from the initiative. However, not all eligible recipients will be able to receive the full $400, as this will depend on specific income limits and your filing status.

How to qualify to receive your share of the inflation rebate checks

To receive your inflation rebate check, eligibility was based on your filed 2023 state income tax return. The following qualifying income thresholds and filing status taxpayers will be eligible to receive the full $400:

  • Married couples filing jointly earning less than $150,000
  • Qualifying surviving spouse earning less than $150,000

In addition to these income thresholds, you must have ensured that filed Form IT-201 for the 2023 tax year, as benefits will be distributed automatically based on the income reported in this form. Additionally, you must not have been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return, even if you meet all the income threshold criteria to receive the inflation refund check. The payments will be mailed to the most recent address the Taxation Department has listed for you.
