While China, Japan, and America have long dominated the EV realm, Asia’s latest EV surprise is not from China or Japan. A new contender has entered the EV market from South Asia, and this contender challenges Tesla and BYD’s dominance in the EV market, too. An automaker, initially known for its SUVs and agricultural vehicles, is now taking the electric revolution by storm. Having brand-new electric vehicles that are ready to launch in the next year, this company is ready to put forward electric vehicles that will demand attention.
The South Asian contender is making an appearance in the EV market
India’s Mahindra is planning to double up on its EV offering by 2028, and the company promises to compete with Tesla and BYD by offering EVs that can outperform while remaining affordable. With the introduction of its first electric SUVs, the automaker has hinted at a new wave of launches that will include the unveiling of the XUV 3XO EV, Mahindra Vision S, the 5-Door Mahindra Thar EV, and the XEV 7e. The Mahindra XUV 700 facelift is currently undergoing tests and will also debut next year.
With the XUV 3XO EV making its debut this November, Mahindra will reveal its most affordable electric SUV to date. While affordability will allow Mahindra to compete with the likes of BYD, it’s the performance of the new XUV 3XO EV that will steal the show. With an expected range of 400 kilometers and its 35 kWh battery pack, this Mahindra can surely ride alongside Tesla’s EVs.
Mahindra also plans to launch the Mahindra XEV 7e, which is a seven-seater SUV. The XEV 7e will launch in late 2025 or early 2026. The hope is that this combination of practicality and luxury will appeal to families, too.
Mahindra’s EVs are built for a global road
While Mahindra is rather ambitious, competing with the likes of Tesla or BYD, the real reason Mahindra can compete is because of its adaptability. Created in collaboration with global suppliers, these EVs are geared to handle any climate or market. Mahindra’s EVs are not only manufactured while keeping India’s roads in mind, but also European and African roads too.
A South Asian innovation meeting global standards
Mahindra’s XEV 7e is in the pipeline and is set to feature a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and ventilated front seats. From Mahindradra’s XEV 7e, it becomes clear that it showcases performance standards similar to Western EVs. Mahindra is going further than other EVs, offering these performance specs at a rather affordable price range.
Also in the pipeline is the Mahindra Vision S, a concept vehicle which is said to pay tribute to the company’s more compact vehicles. Production of this vehicle will only begin a few years later.
In creating models for the urban drivers and models for the more adventurous drivers, Mahindra is testing the waters by attracting a market of its own. Not going after the luxury EV market or mass market, Mahindra is creating EVs meant for the global market that are technologically excellent and financially reasonable. Already, BYD surrenders on EVs and announces a major decision, but could Mahindra influence BYD’s future decisions?
Mahindra’s expanding EV portfolio for South Asia
Mahindra is not just looking at expanding its EV offering. The automaker is set on putting South Asian EVs on the global map. China, Japan, and America have always tapped into technological excellence when it came to EVs; however, India is providing some competition when it comes to technologically forward EVs.
With the launch of the XUV 3XO EV in November, Mahindra is writing a new script for all EVs in Asia. If Mahindra is successful in its ambitious dream, it will accelerate towards a better EV future for India. Asia’s surprise shockwave may very well change the market while redefining and reimagining practical and powerful EVs. Could Mahindra spell more bad news for America and Tesla EVs?
