There is an energy-rich blue paradise emerging in America that cares about the environment as per the latest audits. A new lithium production target has been set in South America all thanks to the Arcadium Lithium’s Fenix Mine project which ensures that lithium’s production is ongoing. Even though operations at Fenix Mine, that is located in Salar del Hombre Muerto, has been continous for the last 27 years, bigger plans seem to be on the horizon.

Big changes on the horizon with big numbers, 100,000 tonnes per year

The 100,000 figure per year seems to be the latest production target that has been set by Arcadium Lithium for the Fenix Mine that needs to be reached by 2030. The target deals with the tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate equivalent that will be extracted.

The target is rather ambitious as the Fenix mine produces much less than the target amount at present. However, a two-stage expansion is on the cards that seeks to improve the mine’s capacity so that it can reach the newest target set for the next 5 years. With the new target in mind, the Arcadium Lithium will be one of the top producers across the globe.

Thus far, 100,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate is the target that needs to be produced yearly to provide enough lithium for more than 2 million electric vehicles every year.

Scaling up production at the blue paradise in a responsible manner

The Fenix Mine has become the site of new targets and the source of larger volumes of lithium, however, the area in question as to where lithium will be extracted has been labelled the, “blue paradise.” The agenda put forward by Arcadium Lithium is to ensure cleaner lithium that will be acquired in an ethical way.

So keen is Arcadium Lithium that back in February 2025, the Fenix mine was one of the initial operations in Argentina to move forward with the IRMA audit. The audit involved a third-party assessment which came in to assess to what extent the initiative ties in with Responsible Mining Assurance.  Accordingly, the IRMA standards are said to be rather demanding in terms of looking at both impacts to the environment and overall transparency. Operations at the Fenix Mine exceeded the 50% of the best-practice benchmarks, however, there is still a vital component that requires a final review. That is the component of Free, Prior and Informed Consemt (FPIC) and that too from the local communities.

The fact that Arcadium Lithium took the decision to pursue the IRMA audit depicts transparency in bettering mining practice and that too in a responsible way.

The new way forward for Arcadium Lithium’s mission

As has been stated by Paul Graves, CEO of Arcadium Lithium, the audit is a milestone in terms of advocating for better engagement with local communities and for transparency. If Arcadium Lithium wishes to scale up their mission, this is a rather significant way forward.

Both the U.S. and Europe are looking at better supply chains and the IRMA scores are playing the role of being the benchmark to which Arcadium Litium can raise to in terms of mining with care. The good news is that we are on 10,000,000 kg and counting with America’s most strategic mine in history opening up.

Expansion plans underway at the Fenix Mine

In terms of responsible mining practices, activity in the Fenix Mine, Arcadium Lithium is ensuring better practices to increase lithium in quantity and quality. The lithium landscape is being shaped in America with expansion plans further on the cards and the EV evolution not too far out of sight.

The clean energy future may be linked with the blue paradise. While Searles Lake was under the global spotlight for marking the end of lithium, we haven’t yet given up hope on lithium.
