These individuals are set to receive an accumulative total of $8,700 worth of stimulus checks. Stimulus payments are generally distributed when it is identified that a significant number of residents would serve to benefit from direct financial intervention. While not providing a long-term solution, stimulus checks provide the most direct and immediate impact for residents facing financial strain. While generally distributed on a once-off acute basis, they can also be distributed on a recurring basis depending on the nature of the program.

Stimulus checks to provide immediate relief

Stimulus checks are usually reserved for periods of economic downturn in order to encourage spending by residents, thereby offsetting a recession. Further, they provide immediate financial relief, particularly for low-income and other economically vulnerable residents. While not often distributed by federal authorities, individual states regularly distribute stimulus checks to their residents.

This year, New York authorities have been particularly active in distributing these payments to their residents. This year, authorities introduced the new inflation rebate checks initiative, whereby residents can qualify to receive a one-time stimulus payment worth up to $400. The initiative was implemented as a response to the rise in sales tax New Yorkers have recently experienced, thanks to the effects of inflation.

Qualifying criteria to receive the rebates will be based on taxpayers’ 2023 state income tax returns. The amount you receive for your rebate will be determined based on your household income as well as your filing status, with the following individuals qualifying to receive the full $400 rebate:

  • Married couple filing jointly with an annual household income of less than $150,000
  • Qualifying surviving spouses with an annual household income of less than $150,000

In addition to these parameters, you must also ensure that you were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return and that you filed Form IT-201 for tax year 2023. Rebates began to be distributed automatically in September for taxpayers who met the qualifying criteria.

$8,700 stimulus checks for these residents

This year, California authorities implemented their Sacramento Family First Economic Support Pilot Program (FFESP). The program is intended to investigate the feasibility of the state implementing a guaranteed income program for low-income families with young children. As part of the pilot, 200 residents were recruited who are the main caregivers of a child under the age of five years old. To have qualified to take part, your household income must have been less than 200% of the federal poverty line.

Current beneficiaries will continue to receive a $725 payment each month, starting in June of this year and continuing for a full calendar year, bringing their cumulative total for stimulus checks to $8,700. In addition to these payments, eligible beneficiaries are provided with a variety of financial resources, such as financial coaching and monthly financial webinars, to ensure that they are well-equipped to manage their finances once the program comes to an end.

Multiple stimulus checks to be distributed this month

In addition to the recurring FFESP payments, other states are continuing to distribute their own stimulus checks this month, just before the start of the holiday season. These payments will provide beneficiaries a boost to cover the expected increase in expenses around this time of the year.

On top of the variety of stimulus checks distributed across states, other authorities are continuing to distribute tax rebates to their residents. While federal income tax season came to a conclusion in April and most, if not all, rebates should have been issued by now, individual states are continuing to distribute their own tax rebates for residents for both state income tax but also other tax initiatives, such as property taxes, such as New York’s STAR and New Jersey’s ANCHOR program.
