This state is distributing a new round of checks to these eligible individuals. Stimulus check initiatives continue to be one of the most direct and effective ways local and state governments are able to implement financial help for their residents with immediate effect. While widespread federal stimulus initiatives have not been seen since the COVID-19 pandemic, that has not stopped states from continuing on with their own social programs to offer assistance to low-income individuals.

How stimulus checks provide direct financial relief

Stimulus checks are not only beneficial for residents but also are good for the health of a local economy. During times of low economic growth, the risk of a recession runs high. By distributing stimulus checks to residents, it encourages spending in local economies in order to dodge a recession occurring while also helping vulnerable residents cover immediate financial expenses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these payments were essential as part of the Biden Administration’s Economic Impact Payments (EIP) amidst widespread job loss and retrenchment.

While stimulus checks are generally associated with one-time payments distributed by policymakers as a response to acute financial crises, some stimulus checks occur regularly as part of established programs. An example of this includes Alaska’s Permanent Dividend Fund (PDF) program, which is a payment paid out to nearly all 600,000 residents of the state once a year to allow citizens to share in the state’s mineral and oil resources.

The PDF program has limited qualifying criteria to ensure that as many residents of the state can benefit from the program. This year, the payment amounts to $1,702, representing a significant increase from last year’s payment. The state is currently sending out payments to its residents, with your payment date depending on your eligibility status, which is on the state’s PDF program website. Payments will continue to be paid out through October into September.

New $725 check for these eligible beneficiaries

If you are a resident of California, you may not be aware that the state is currently underway with piloting its Family First Economic Support Pilot Program. This program is the first of its kind for the state, which is investigating the feasibility of a guaranteed income program for low-income residents of the state.

The program began sending our $725 payments to selected beneficiaries for the pilot in June and will continue for a full calendar year into 2026. To qualify for the program, you had to be below 200% of the federal poverty line, in addition to the following criteria:

  • You must be the parent or guardian of a child under the age of five years old
  • You must reside in the Sacramento area following ZIP codes: 95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, or 95838

In addition, the program has also been offering beneficiaries financial assistance in the form of budgeting counselling and assistance, community resources and support groups, and financial webinars in order to help families be self-sufficient in managing their money once the program ends.

New changes for this social assistance program

While the Family First Economic Support Pilot Program is relevant only to those who live in California, one of the largest federal social support programs is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a federally funded program that provides approximately 40 million beneficiaries nationwide with economic support to pay for food costs.

However, from next year, beneficiaries of SNAP will see a host of new changes coming their way. States are currently underway with tightening restrictions on what SNAP beneficiaries are allowed to purchase using their benefits. While there already are limitations on what beneficiaries are allowed to purchase, from next year, states are becoming stricter with the purchase of sugary drinks and foods to promote and encourage healthy living among their beneficiaries.
