Stimulus checks provide direct financial assistance
While stimulus checks do not address systemic problems regarding affordability and cost-of-living, they have the advantage of being able to alleviate imminent expenses in the wake of a financial crisis. These checks are generally, therefore, not recurring payments but are rather reactions to acute circumstances where authorities see a need to step in and provide immediate financial assistance.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the country experienced rates of unemployment that hit highs not seen since the Great Depression. In response to this widespread income loss for millions of families, the Biden Administration stepped in with three rounds of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) between March 2020 and March 2024. The final EIP payment, which formed part of the ‘Rescue America’ legislation plan, was still up for eligible recipients to claim this tax season, amounting to $1,400.
While no other widespread stimulus check payments like the EIPs have been released by federal authorities since, there are more recent stimulus check payments organized by the Trump Administration for specific groups of citizens, one of them being for families who have recently welcomed a new baby. If you recently welcomed a newborn to your family between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, you can receive a once-off $1,000 payment from the Trump Administration into a ‘Trump account’ which parents can make contributions towards of up to $5,000 annulay to encourage saving for their children’s future.
This state will send $400 checks if you meet the criteria
New York State has been one of the most generous states this year with regard to sending out one-time stimulus checks to its residents. New York is one of the most expensive states to live in, and the state’s administration is working hard to get control of the cost-of-living crisis. Governor Kathy Hochul’s official statement earlier this year announced that eligible beneficiaries will be able to receive checks worth up to $400 in order to offset rising inflation costs.
“The cost of living is still too damn high, so I promised to put more money in your pockets — and we got it done,” Governor Hochul said.
Eight million residents are expected to benefit from the inflation checks, with the checks set to be distributed between October and November of this year. Payments will be automatically distributed based on your most recent tax return. In order to qualify for the full $400 check, you must be a couple filing jointly with a combined income not exceeding $150,000.
More payments are coming to eligible beneficiaries
While the $400 inflation rebate check is only open for joint filers who earn below the stipulated income, other filers can still qualify to receive a check. If you are a single filer earning less than $75,000, you will receive a $200 check, while single filers earning between $75,000 and $150,000 will receive $150. Couples filing jointly earning between $150,000 and $300,000 will receive $300.
Other once-off payments Hochul’s administration is sending out include an expansion of the state’s child tax credit program, where families with a child under the age of four can apply to receive a $1,000 tax credit, while those with children between the ages of four and sixteen can receive a child tax credit worth $500. Nearly three million children are expected to benefit from the child credit expansion, with nearly 200,000 additional children now able to claim the credit.
