Electrical vehicles (EVs) in the past decade have soared in popularity, often credited as being the future of passenger vehicles. With the world growing increasingly concerned over the imminent climate crisis which is upon us, the transportation industry has been target in particular towards coming up with alternative engine solutions in order to phase out the internal combustion engine to reduce harmful carbon emissions. However, a new player from this French autodeveloper is on the rise.

EVs continue to dominate on the road

In the world of alternative engine solutions, EVs outpace any other innovative engine advancement by far. Today, in order to remain competitive, nearly all major automobile developers offers some form of an electrical engine in order to highlight to their consumers not only their commitment towards a sustainable future but also to ensure that they remain on top of the latest most advanced technology.

However while EVs are the preferred favorite by both consumers and producers ale other alternative engine solutions continue to be on the rise. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is starting to emerge as the go-to complement for EVs in order to ensure that the passenger vehicle industry has access to a myriad of solutions in order to achieve carbon-neutrality.

This French autodeveloper says goodbye to EVs?

Despite the popularity of the EV, some automakers are choosing to find their niche by focusing on the advancement of hydrogen fuel-cell technology, particularly to fill the gap in the transportation world for industries where electrical technology is not ideal, such as the aviation industry whereby the batteries required to power an aircraft would be too dense to actually render the aircraft able to fly.

Luxury vehicle developer Alpine, last year, has chosen to join the likes of Japanese automobile developers such as Toyota and Hyundai in developing the hydrogen fuel-cell engine. The French company first showcased their hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle as a concept car in 2022 with the Alpenglow. Last year, the company showcased an updated version, dubbed the Alpenglow Hy6.

The vehicle is made up of a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine that spins up to 9,000rpm, puts out 740bhp/568lb ft with a max output of 205. The vehicle features three 2.1kg hydrogen tanks which can store hydrogen with a pressure of up to 700 bars.

“With the development of this brand new Hy6 V6 engine, we are demonstrating our commitment to hydrogen research, which could herald motorsport applications with high-performance levels…The Alpenglow Hy6 concept is the perfect example of what is possible to achieve the essential step of reducing carbon emissions in motorsport,”said Bruno Famin, Vice-President of Alpine Motorsports.

While the French autodeveloper is advancing their hydrogen solutions, they are still soldiering on with their electrical vehicle solutions, with plans to have seven new all-electric models developed by 2030.

Paving the way for a sustainable world

The transportation industry has soared when it comes to producing advanced alternative engine solutions. The bigger challenge lies now not in producing the technology, but actually implementing it. In order to do this, stakeholders across a variety of sectors will need to work together in order to scale-up supporting infrastructure for this technology in order to convince consumers to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine.

Acting as a source of inspiration, Norway is well on its way to be the first country in the world to achieve 100% electric vehicle sales for all new vehicle sales form next year. Last year, the country closed in on this statistic at 89% thanks to support from the Norwegian government in providing incentives to their citizens to purchase electrical vehicles as well as ensuring that accessibility to charging points are available throughout the country to prevent EV drivers from being stranded thanks to a dead battery.
