Stimulus checks came as a solution to overcome the pandemic crisis, first at the federal level, then at the state level. However, everything could change from now on with the first states starting to ban them for good (with outrage running through the streets). We tell you what has happened and, first and foremost, what will happen soon.
Four states to ban stimulus checks for good: what has happened with this social benefit
It now seems that the phase of stimulus checks is over for some parts of the US economy which went bad with pandemic. Thus the cases were set by at least four states on the ban of sending a stimulus check or any form of recurring payments from the government to the public.
It is fiscal stimulus that has the top spot among a number of states. Their governors have put new laws in place that forbids any further policies that are revolving around distributed stimulus payments, commonly considered as unconditional guaranteed income.
These four states will ban stimulus checks: you won´t receive cash anymore
The four states you will see now have banned stimulus checks for a variety of reasons, although most citizens argue that it is due to strictly political reasons. Whatever the case may be, which we will enter with impartiality, we will show you the ones that group millions of citizens who will no longer receive this social benefit.
West Virginia
In May 2024, West Virginia passed a law through which they stated that local governments in the state shall not be allowed to dispense stimulus checks to citizens or any other forms of direct cash aid. This controversial manoeuvre is initiated, with the main goal being to avoid the situation where people are used to financial help.
Actually, this statute prohibits cities and counties from creating guaranteed income programs that give recurring, no-strings attached cash. The governor’s opponents countered these claims by arguing that there is a difference between handouts and providing a living income, one of which is more sustainable than the other.
Idaho
In the footsteps of West Virginia, the State of Idaho adopted a bill prohibiting local councils from spending money for providing stimulus checks or any basic income system to residents. Though this piece of bill is tied only to Republican State Legislators, the policy prevents cities or counties may from adopting such programs.
It was similar to the West Virginia situation when the proponents of the bill insisted that the stimulus checks and universal cash subsidized reciprocity made people not to work but to depend on the government. Those in opposition mentioned, the fact that the payments can take people out of poverty.
Wyoming
In 2023, Wyoming was the third state to make the kind of law banning future stimulus checks and other types of cash aid, in which the government is the donor, illegal. The Wyoming bill was the opening move undertaken by the Republican state legislators as part of a wider, conservative enactment on multiple state levels.
Proponents of the activist stated that checks as well as direct cash transfer have encouraged dependence and vegging-out among receivers. The ban just proposed in Wyoming also applies to the forthcoming stimulus package, universal basic income schemes, or any other cash transfers to citizens.
Kansas
This 2024 Governor Colyer of Kansas, the state, set up an anti-stimulus-check mechanism by means of which the Republicans adopted the ban. The Sunflower state, similar to West Virginia, Idaho, and Wyoming, will pass laws preventing the administration from giving money to their citizens via direct payments.
Due to them realizing that many Kansans were able to stabilize or survive during the pandemic because of stimulus checks, the Democrats in the state legislature adamantly opposed the measure. However, there was a huge polemic and the case would end up in the justice.
As you can see, these four states have decided to put an end to stimulus checks, although always within their territorial scope. What do we mean by this? That there are cities that have approved their own, so this trend should not change, at least in the short term. In fact, a new massive round is expected in several places in America before the summer, which we will inform you about.
