If an engine can reveal what a cleaner future looks like, it must be quite the engine. Germany has put forward the internal combustion engine (ICE), which proves that a clean future may very well be within the hood of the car. BMW was at the forefront and has patented combustion technology set to reform how gasoline engines ultimately perform. Could the future of clean combustion finally be unveiled to the world?

The reappearance of the pre-chamber with BMW

Pre-chamber technology was generally utilized in the good old diesel engines until the 1980s. The reason why such pre-chamber technology was favored was due to the noise reduction aspect as well as the better combustion efficiency at lower speeds. BMW has taken a trip back to the past and decided to tap into this pre-chamber technology yet again, however, mainly for gasoline engines.

BMW has fully reevaluated the premise of pre-chamber technology. The brand, as such, seems to prefer to use pre-chamber technology specifically for modern gasoline engines. BMW also recognized the need to tweak the more archaic pre-chamber technology. The new design put forward is a pre-chamber that features ports that connect fully to the key combustion chamber. It is a spark plug that kindles a mixture of air and fuel within the pre-chamber.

This spark plug is also highly different from usual spark plugs, whereby electrodes and ignition are commonly featured. The way the design works for high-performance loads results in a smoother and cleaner engine.

Engineering responsibility and performance

Germany made quite a statement when it stated its new engines will be powered 100% by a new fuel. Germany seemed to have chosen to go with a battery-powered electric future and showed a preference for alternative options over going down the hydrogen pathway. Germany is yet again making a statement, but this time through BMW.

While Audi is promoting a full catalog of electric vehicles, moving away from combustion engines, BMW is exploring the realm of internal combustion engines yet again. This particular BMW engine showcases its commitment to performance responsibly. Several advantages are offered with the engine, such as better mileage and decreased emissions. Due to the spark plug and pre-chamber setup, heat dissipation is allowed. This was initially a problem with ICEs. This approach was taken to uphold Euro 7 emissions standards while ensuring impactful performance.

With the BMW engine, the flexibility offered is impressive. The engine can work with a range of engine sizes, including three-cylinder engines and V8s as well. The wide range of applications will make this engine truly remarkable. The ICE will also provoke us to reassess the way we think about clean combustion. While BMW surely is promoting the move towards internal combustion engines, it is not at all signifying the end of electric vehicles.

The beginning of internal combustion engines

Mainly, what BMW has achieved is to showcase how strong the brand is in terms of combining technologies. By pushing forward with this internal combustion engine design, BMW offers its drivers versatility, more so in the EV market, where certain infrastructure remains limited.

BMW has not yet provided confirmation as to which list of models will include this technology. However, BMW and Germany are ultimately spreading the message that a clean combustion engine can be achieved. As the future of engineering continues to evolve, so too will these combustion engines.

BMW is ready to change the world with this patent that is meant for combustion engines, but in an entirely new way. BMW’s modification of an aged technology proves that high-performance engines can and will be brought to the fore in the coming decades.
