Mercedes-Benz’s new model has some people describing the vehicle as akin to a “spacecraft” since sitting in the EQS electric limousine does not feel like sitting in a car at all. Looking like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, Mercedes-Benz is taking automotive innovation to a new level and showing that a vehicle can be jam-packed with futuristic technology. From fingerprint scanning to an expanding hyperscreen, Mercedes-Benz’s new offering is a wonder to behold.
A transformed steering wheel from traditional to yoke
This updated EQS will also feature a delectable voice control feature that heightens the driving experience all the more. Mercedes-Benz is setting an entirely new standard in the EV market, proving that autonomous driving and luxury can merge to improve a driver’s driving experience considerably.
One of the features attracting the most attention has to be the yoke steering wheel, which was showcased in concept models. It pays tribute to an aircraft stick. The yoke resembles that of the talking car, KITT, from the 1980s show, Knight Rider.
While style is one of the reasons to include the rare yoke steering wheel design, it’s actually intended to complement “steer by wire”. The system uses an amalgamation of control units, motors, and sensors to deliver real-time responsiveness to make drivers happy.
The system automatically adjusts for parking and making U-turns, so drivers only need a half turn from lock-to-lock, making the process easier. When driving fast, the system can recalibrate to offer fluid control. This is one of the ways that Mercedes has managed to overcome setbacks faced with earlier yoke designs from Tesla’s Model S and Model X. The fixed steering ratio of these older models led to many critics criticizing the yoke steering wheel.
Mercedes-Benz is one up on competitor Tesla, as the automaker has considered everything, including extra actuators and a backup power supply as well.
“Hey Mercedes,” voice system is a game-changer
Tesla S may have been an engineering masterpiece that revealed something wonderful when it reached 1 million miles, however, Mercedes has its “Hey Mercedes” feature to brag about. This voice system is AI-generated and integrated into the Mercedes-Benz system. “Hey Mercedes” can be used to play music, temper with the climate, controls, adjust seat settings, and for explaining the vehicle’s features whilst conversing with the driver.
To activate this voice system, the driver needs to say, “Hey Mercedes,” and the response is instant. From directions to opening the sunroof, voice commands can do it all.
Buttons are no longer a necessity when a simple voice command can do the trick. Voice control will be deemed more necessary as Mercedes starts steadily rolling out Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. Entertainment on wheels is on offer.
The new Mercedes dashboard for the win
Imagine driving a vehicle that knows who you are. The new Mercedes utilizes biometric fingerprint scanning. When the driver enters the vehicle, the driver’s identity gets verified, and the driver’s personalized settings are revealed. This car is aware of the driver’s preferred driving mode, music history, and seat positioning.
All the relevant information gets featured on the hyperscreen that stretches across the dashboard. The yoke is the perfect complement to this screen as it makes the screen fully visible.
Mercedes-Benz is now driven by its futuristic pursuits, seeing and has come to feature a steering wheel that looks like a fight stick, a voice assistant to fulfill every need, and a journey that is nothing like anything in this world. The era of the “spacecraft” car has now dawned upon us. Hopefully, there will be no electrical issues that lead to Mercedes recalling these models once they have been sold.
