Stimulus checks are one way local and federal governments can directly contribute to ensure that they can financially support economically vulnerable members of society. These payments not only help to provide immediate financial relief, but they also prevent a recession from occurring during times of economic downturn by encouraging individuals to spend money. Recently, these individuals from this state will be receiving new one-off stimulus payments.
Stimulus checks help to support millions of families
Stimulus payment programs exist across states, as well as federal initiatives operating during periods of mass economic crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government sent out three rounds of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) to eligible individuals to help citizens cope with the extreme income loss that occurred during the height of the pandemic between March 2020 and 2021.
Recently, citizens had their final chance to claim this final EIP payment during the most recent tax season if they had ever done so in March 2021. However, this has subsequently spurred rumors of a new federal stimulus payment set to be distributed to qualifying individuals. While no such federal initiative has been confirmed, other states are continuing to send out their own stimulus checks.
This state sets out to send $400 payments to citizens
Recently, New York state has been making headlines with its variety of one-off stimulus checks and payments in order to help citizens cope with the high cost of living in the state. Home to New York City, the state is known for being one of the most expensive places to live in the U.S., with New York City’s Manhattan constantly taking the top spot for the most expensive city to live in.
Recently, Governor Kathy Hochul’s official statement in April of this year outlined a new $400 inflation check to New York couples, or a $200 check for individuals. The checks come after a long battle between Gov. Hochul and other lawmakers over the $254 billion spending plan, where the budget plan was announced at the end of April, four weeks after the original deadline.
“We worked through some really challenging issues,” Hochul said in an announcement in April 2025. “We refuse to be drawn into the toxic, divisive politics of the moment, and we never lost sight of the people that we were sent here to serve, and we never strayed away from the issues they cared the most about.”
The inflation checks will return a total of $2 billion to more than 8 million taxpayers in the state in order to help relieve some financial stress due to rising costs. With $400 being the maximum payment you can receive, to receive this maximum payment, you must be a married couple filing jointly, earning less than $150,000 combined. The new checks will be mailed to eligible citizens between October and November of this year.
New York is expanding other social program initiatives
The once-off inflation checks are not the only new policy New York has been adopting to help state citizens cope with the cost of living. The state recently announced that they would be providing once-off Birth Allowance for Beginning Year (BABY) payments for new couples, where a payment of $1,800 will be sent to qualifying families with a new baby.
In addition, the state is planning to expand its own Child Tax Credit program, where eligible families could receive up to $1,000 per child who is under the age of four years old. In addition, if you have children between the ages of four and sixteen, you would be eligible to receive a $500 tax break for each qualifying child. To qualify to receive the credit, the household would need to earn an income under $200,000. The proposal for the new credit has yet to be confirmed.
