One state is all in favor of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) installations this summer and citizens in this state can be fined for speeding real soon. While this may not be the first state to rely on Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) devices to pick up on risky drivers, it is a state advocating that smart fines be issued to reckless drivers. Virginia was the first state to push forward the agenda of installing these ISA devices due to the shocking statistics that reflected a link between speeding and crashes. This state is now following suit with full implementation said to be adopted in 2029. This year is all about early implementation and getting a head start.

Picking up on those who speed using technology

Perhaps the remedy to prevent speeding is to use technology that has been specifically designed to discourage speeding beyond speed limits. The ISA is like an onboard system meant to pick up on acceleration. The ISA will be mandatory for those drivers who had their licenses suspended due to incidents of reckless driving. Reckless drivers will have to face the consequences of their behavior by either opting to wait out the suspension period and not drive at all or to drive when an ISA device is installed in their vehicles.

In this particular state, a shocking 34% of all road accidents in 2023 had been caused by speeding. The number of road accidents also increased from 30% between 2015 and 2021. The law serves as an attempt to curb this problem and will ensure that less accidents caused by speeding occurs on the roads in the state.

Which state is depending on ISA?

Washington is the state advocating ISA with Governor Bob Ferguson favoring the law so as to prevent reckless driving and to hold careless drivers responsible for their bad driving habits.

There are still too many people who carry on driving badly even after having their licenses suspended and the State Representative Mari Leavitt, who sponsored the bill, stated that due to the development of the careless driving culture, Washington roads remain dangerous.

Putting an ISA device in the vehicle of a reckless driver will allow the driver to feel much like a criminal, which is a punishment that these bad drivers surely deserve. Washington has shifted its focus to its roads and has tightened its bans on certain vehicles.

States all over the U.S. considering improving road rules

Similar to the reliance on technology to curb bad driving in Virginia, House Bill 1596 in the Washington State Legislature signifies that Washington too is being firmer on bad driving habits. Washington is another state that hopes to ensure that roads throughout the state are much safer. When making use of use of technological devices to trace bad driving, punitive measures can be addressed instantly.

While states are embracing different road laws, some road rules could possibly also get adopted nationwide. States, like Washington, are putting in much effort into make roads far safer. The rollout of the ISA infrastructure has started already to ensure that adoption is easier in 2029.

It will surely take a while for the state to embrace the helpfulness of this technological advancements, and the ISA still needs to be integrated with the state’s existing traffic enforcement and DMV systems.

By making drivers accountable for their actions on the road and by allowing an immediate speed control, this state surely seeks to ensure roads are safer and that drivers slow down. Could the same agenda be on the cards for all the other states? Only time will tell if other states too will be depending on technological advancements to ensure safer roads.
