There was a time when scientists classified renewable energy as photovoltaic or non-photovoltaic, something that seems to have been left behind forever. The search for new ways to produce electricity without polluting has led them to achieve something unthinkable some time ago: this is the unicorn energy that has scientists in shock and that is by far better than hydrogen.

This is the “unicorn” energy consideres to be an imposible, sci-fi idea

Lastly, the transport of metallic hydrogen has long been referred to as “the Holy Grail for high-pressure science“. The actual life form of the element which seems to posses highly special characteristics does not occur in nature. Researchers have been striving for several years to create metallic hydrogen in a laboratory.

Experts revealed recently a thrilling discovery; one that scientists crowned a triumph: metallic hydrogen. This was accomplished through a process which involved squeezing hydrogen between two diamond tipped pistons to unparalleled pressure over 40,000 atmospheres.

The consequence of this discovery can be measured in astronomical terms and Space Science is set to benefit immensely from the discovery. Metallic hydrogen is two things, a superconductor at room temperature that could change power transmission and wires and electronics.

As for the component, it may also be metastable at normal pressures, which means that it can be used to fuel powerful rockets. This recent break-through in forming metallic hydrogen has created potential dimensions that can revolutionise science and technology.

90 years trying to find this new energy: How have been scientist searching

This material has been pursued by scientists for decades because of the many potentially applications it would have. This material is incredibly hard to make as onsets a pressure of 25 gigapascals; or 250 thousand times more force than is experienced on planet earth at seafood level.

The go for metallic hydrogen has been in process since the early period of the 1930s. Moreover in 1935, Wigner and Huntington, the physicists, suggested that introduction of enough pressure would turn solid molecular hydrogen to metal.

Other unprecendented techniques involve the use of shock compression techniques which, according to researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, were used in its experiment to reach pressures that were thought to be necessary in 1996.

Other scientists resorted to the use of facilities such as diamond anvil cells and laser heating which are even more advanced. Although they recorded high pressures that were a Lunine’s suggestion, metallic hydrogen did not surrender. The pressures used applied were either insufficient or artifacts could not endure high pressures.

Metallic hydrogen, the new form of energy that could change everyrthing un industry

Metallic hydrogen has the potential of being used in various innovative solutions and industries, but only if it is synthesised and obtained in sufficient quantities. Scientists are fascinated by metallic hydrogen because of its potential properties.

It is also important because it is the only known substance that can exist as metallic hydrogen and also as a superconductor at high temperatures. Considering RTSCs, new electrical power grids may be developed through which electricity is permitted to flow with no loss, and efficiency of many systems might be increased.

An exotic state of matter that remains a theoretical prediction but could exist: metallic hydrogen, if it does meet expectations, it will be able to superconduct at astronomically high temperatures, potentially revolutionizing technology.

Metallic hydrogen can also enhance rocket technology with a revolutionary power source. It is believed that the growth in energy density can offer tremendous augmentation in fuel efficiency as compared to the other propel lants currently in use.

This unicorn energy not only shows how we will be able to produce electricity in ways that were almost unthinkable until a few years ago, but also how we will be able to forget about dependence on nuclear power (something that the various COPs and also WWF have been demanding for some time). However, we did not expect to find a more powerful source than hydrogen, and now we have it in front of us.
