Ohio is soon becoming a renewable hub, especially with massive solar projects underway like the Union Solar Farm and Fox Squirrel Solar Farm, which are expected to speed up progress. This project showcases the state-of-the-art sustainability initiatives for Ohio toward huge economic and environmental returns.
Union Solar Farm: Supplying renewable energy to 62,000 homes
The Union Solar Farm has been commissioned at Marysville near central Ohio. It is a 325MWp facility based on 760000 solar plates established over 22 square miles in area. This farm generates enough energy to be consumed by around 62000 homes every year.
Union Solar Farm fortifies the point that businesses have been converting towards renewable energy sources in reducing their carbon emissions by securing a long-term power purchase agreement with this company, Amazon. However, the project provides more than just the generation of clean energy: during its construction phase, over 370 jobs were created, with almost 80% of those filled by Ohio residents.
It is now going to be around 20 permanent jobs for the next few years at the farm for sustaining it, thus contributing to the local economy. Investing back into the strep of development, ACCIONA Energía has also been included within its own Social Impact Management program, whereby some earnings of the project are driven into actions targeted toward the improvement of life quality for residents.
From the creation of jobs to improving communities, Union Solar Farm represents the intersection between sustainability and socioeconomic development. With the kind of experience forging the walls of over 20 years in North America, ACCIONA Energía has gone ahead to build a renewable energy fleet of more than 3GWs spread across the US and Canada and continues to expand clean energy frontiers.
650 jobs, 1.4 million panels: The story behind the success of Fox Squirrel Solar
Fox Squirrel Solar happens to be Ohio’s largest solar farm in the US that proves the concept of largescale renewables. The 577MW plant is in Madison County, west of Columbus, developed by EDF Renewables and co-owned with the Canadian energy company, Enbridge.
The size is simply jaw-dropping: 1.4 million solar panels and 159 inverters cover that area, producing enough electricity for 118,000 homes a year. The project took place in three phases, with the last one coming on stream in December 2024.
At peak construction, Fox Squirrel employed as many as 650 workers who logged nearly 1.5 million hours on the job. The power generated here, like Union Solar Farm, goes to supply energy to Amazon under a PPA, thus sealing its role in resolving corporate sustainability issues. A hallmark of EDF Renewables is community engagement.
Senior Vice President Kate O’Hair brought attention to how many jobs the project might create, and millions invested in the area. As the farm ramps up toward operations, EDF will continue its deep commitment to promote environmental stewardship and the community.
Ohio has reached a new milestone with Fox Squirrel Solar, but its days as Ohio’s largest solar farm will soon be numbered. A late commissioning this year will usher in the 800MW Oak Run Solar Project, which promises to raise the question of what Ohio can do with renewables.
The renewed energies of Ohio: Climbing the solar ladder
For Ohio, renewable energy is boosting development with projects like Union Solar and Fox Squirrel showing that clean energy fuels economic growth. While Ohio now ranks 13th in the nation for solar capacity, it is looking to climb to 8th within the next five years with the addition of 9,574MW of capacity.
These projects create jobs and stimulate local investment and demonstrate how sustainability and economic goals align. Corporate demand, primarily through long-term PPAs with Amazon, signals Ohio’s competitive position in overall emissions reduction as well as its place in the renewable economy.
Ohio has rolled out projects like Union Solar and Fox Squirrel that have proven that clean energy can accompany economic growth. In solar capacity, the state ranks at 13th but is soon seeing itself move to 8th place within a five-year time frame, with an additional capacity of 9,574MW.
They build jobs and energize local investment and articulate how sustainability and economic goals align. Corporate demand through long-term PPAs from Amazon makes it an even more attractive destination for clean energy relocation.
Union Solar and Fox Squirrel Solar showcase renewable energy promises in Ohio by providing clean power, jobs, and investment. Greater things are ahead, and Ohio is going to set the pace in solar energy with a blueprint for sustainable growth and clean energy transition.
