America has been keeping a secret for years, in the form of a new understanding of mobility, which is, of course, zero emissions. However, the latest and by far the most revolutionary development has just been unveiled. We are not talking about the hydrogen engine, but about a prototype that was previously experimental and has now become a serious alternative to conventional combustion. You know the brand, and the model is a reinvention of a mythical one, with a detail that surprises the experts.
New engine has been unveiled to the world: It’s not HICEV, but this new prototype from America
This powerhouse from Dodge has been revealed as a Hurricrate engine, a shift in the brand’s performance cannon. This new inline-six engine is in the making to disrupt the crate engine market with an optimum power and extraordinary technology.
The Hurricrate engine comes in two variants:
- Cat. 1 is the most basic one, and it develops 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. All this output is made possible by a twin-turbo CHRA system that produces up to 22 psi boosts. The Cat. 1, which is made of cast aluminum, is equipped with pistons and has a 4:1 compression ratio, and it is equipped with not one but a single high-pressure fuel injection system.
- If further muscle is desired, though, the Cat. 3 version blurs the line even further. It produces a mighty 550 bhp and 531 lb-ft of torque, and it hits a maximum boost of 26 psi. The Cat. 3 features double Garrett turbochargers plus lightweight, forged pistons made from aluminum that are oil-jet cooled for enhanced power.
Dodge is ready for the future of mobility: Maybe it’s not hydrogen, but this well-known fuel
The Hurricrate engines are a perfect example of how Dodge embraces the latest innovations. The basis of both variants is two low-inertia high-flow turbochargers that ensure sharp impulse response. The cylinder bores are scientifically coated with Plasma Transfer Wire Arc (PTWA) to deliver an ultrathin, wearing surface.
The other is the high-pressure direct fuel injection system, which allows the efficient flow of fuel for the best performance. This advanced fuel system plays an important role in the car’s horsepower while still being efficient. Hurricrate is the new engine of Dodge, which is a stark change from the conventional engines of the V8.
Such a design layout helps to achieve a compact engine layout without compromising on the output power figures. The creation of the Hurricrate engine is also in line with Dodge’s plans to continue to enhance their performance portfolio while at the same time cementing the brand’s image of high-output cars.
Dodge has unveiled its plans for commercialization, but what about previous engines?
Compared to other engines within the Dodge range, the Hurricrate rate is quite impressive. The Cat. 3 variant, with a rating of slightly over 183 horsepower per liter, boasts of greater than 10 percent better power density than the HEMI engine in the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170. We can see that even the most basic Cat. 1 engine with 140 horsepower per liter has 7% more power density.
These numbers show that the Hurricrate engine is not just a substitute for the V8 engines of Dodge, but an improvement in terms of density of power and efficiency of the engine. Dodge has even higher expectations for the Hurricrate engine series. The engines are now ready for purchase in the DC Performance community.
As you can see, the new Dodge Hurricrates engine is a demonstration of how far the brand is willing to go to revolutionize transport in our country. On the horizon, we have the ban on combustion engines, which seems to have entered a more uncertain phase, both in America (especially here) and in the European Union. Let’s see if it goes beyond ‘experimental’ and goes into mass production, which will be a great success for the legendary carmaker.
