As the world continues to advance futuristic, sustainable solutions to combat climate change, the automobile industry continues to be at the forefront of this mission. A world that prioritizes sustainability moves towards alternative engine solutions like hydrogen and reduces our reliance on fossil fuels through the use of the internal combustion engine. Lucid is one such automobile brand that has been championing this mission, ensuring that we move in the direction of a more eco-conscious future.

The impact of electric vehicles on the motoring industry

The automotive sector has seen a dramatic transformation thanks to the introduction of electric vehicles. These vehicles put the gears into motion for a move towards greener, more sustainable modes of transportation. Advances in battery technology, escalating environmental concerns, and pro-electric vehicle government regulations have all contributed to the rapid growth of electric vehicles during the last 10 years, in addition to both competition and collaboration among leading automobile brands.

Electric vehicles have been much more successful in the consumer car industry than other alternative engine solutions, such as hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Infrastructure is a major factor for this success. While hydrogen fueling facilities are still scarce and costly to operate, electric charging stations are becoming more common and simpler to establish. Furthermore, EVs are more appealing to regular drivers due to their simpler drivetrains and reduced maintenance requirements.

Lucid’s 1,080 hp electric powertrain competes with Tesla’s

California-based electric vehicle company Lucid has been a growing competitor for fellow American electric vehicle company Tesla. In 2020, they released their first electric  “golden” powertrain, which delivered 1,080 hp. The powertrain was first equipped in their Air. Lucid electric vehicle. Last year, just over 10,000 of this model were sold to consumers. While this number pales in comparison to Tesla’s most popular vehicle, the Model Y, 2024 sales of just over one million, it still marks a significant milestone for a relatively new entrant in the electric vehicle space.

Since developing the Air in 2016, Lucid has been optimizing the car’s drivetrain and 113 kWh all-electric battery pack in anticipation of entering the electric vehicle market that is becoming more and more competitive. This month, Lucid announced their new Gravity 2026 SUV model. The 2026 model is priced from $94,900 and is available to order now.

“Lucid Gravity is the first SUV that truly compromises nothing,” said Eric Bach, SVP Product at Lucid. “It reimagines what an SUV can be, offering an unprecedented combination of comfort and space, ride and handling, practicality and range, and with today’s announcements, exceptional charging performance and convenience. With seating for up to seven full-size adults and space for their luggage, the Lucid Gravity truly is the ultimate vehicle for the whole family.”

Increased competition for Tesla?

Major electric automobile company Tesla has been a driving force behind the electric vehicle revolution, having not only created high-performance electric vehicles but also changed the public’s perspective of what electric vehicles are capable of.

Legacy automakers have been motivated to make significant investments in electrification by Tesla’s streamlined designs, extended range, and vast network of Superchargers, which have raised industry standards. However, Tesla faces increased competition today from international electric vehicle companies such as China’s BYD.

In addition to increased competition, Tesla has been facing production challenges, specifically related to their infamous Cybertrucks. The futuristic-looking vehicles have seen significant recalls since their release two years ago, as well as additional challenges associated with penetrating the European market space due to safety and regulatory concerns. These setbacks have slightly dampened investor confidence and opened the door for competitors like Lucid to gain traction. Nevertheless, Tesla remains a dominant force, continuing to invest in global manufacturing, AI-assisted driving technology, and next-generation battery development to maintain its edge.
