Panels will no longer be needed as shared solar power will arrive in New Yorkers’ homes in December. Solar power without panels will be a way for all residents to share sustainable energy generated from local solar farms. By not needing any panels, homeowners will be able to gain access to clean energy without having to fork out excessive upfront costs. These community solar programs are a stepping stone in New York’s transition to a cleaner energy future.

What will the solar revolution look like in New York?

New York currently sees over 174 projects in development at present, resulting in an impressive total of 12,000 megawatts of capacity. With thirty-two projects, including those of Steuben and Oneida, scheduled to go online by 2025, New York is heading towards remarkable solar development. This means that citizens in the state can invest in solar power by simply subscribing to the community’s solar farm.

Power from shared solar farms goes directly into the state’s grid. All households that are part of the community-based solar farm initiative will gain energy bill credits, which will result in a reduction of their utility bills. The door is now open for those renting in New York and living in the state to install one solar panel and then share the clean power that results.

How will power be received without solar panels?

The whole idea of rooftop solar ownership has been turned on its head. However, there is no longer a need for each household to be in possession of panels. Solar developers will be roped in to build large solar arrays closer to industrial sites and even rural regions. Hundreds and perhaps even thousands of households can get powered in this way.

The national grid will be used to see how much bill credits each citizen shares in on the solar power they deserve, which would then apply to a citizen’s monthly electricity bill. Participants will not be forced to stay part of this community initiative and will be able to cancel at any time. Subscribers will usually see these credits discounted at 10%.

How can the community play a role in terms of this innovative solar power initiative?

New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) has set one of the most ambitious renewable energy projects, which hopes that almost 70% of energy will be generated by renewable sources. With most of the power in the state said to be coming from renewable sources, the ideal solution was to rope in the community and allow them to reap the benefits of such renewable energy systems collectively.

By 2025, the community’s solar capacity will need to surpass 2.5 gigawatts and provide power to over 40,000 homes. With this community solar initiative, the benefit is clear; however, there is also an associated economic benefit. Such solar farms will contribute to tax revenue, even creating jobs in certain areas as well. Perhaps it’s a time when communities can gain access to unlimited energy wherever they go, a time when it is about more than just a solar panel.

A state where everyone benefits from clean energy

While only an elite few would reap the benefits of being able to install and rely on rooftop solar systems, the time has come for entire communities to gain access to sustainable power. This December, citizens will receive the benefit of panel-free solar power. This is a strategic move that combines technology, innovation, and financing.

Soon, farms like Clear View Solar and Eureka South will start providing energy. New York is rolling out a collective solar model where all citizens will benefit from access to clean power. With energy spheres making solar panels outdated, one can only imagine a future of solar power without panels.
