BP, Sempra build 21-MW wind farm in Hawaii

Power generated at Auwahi will be purchased by the Maui Electric Company under a long term power purchase agreement.

British Petroleum’s BP Wind Energy and Sempra US Gas & Power will be building a 21 megawatt wind farm in Hawaii.

Construction has begun on the Auwahi wind farm, which will have the capacity to power up to 10,000 households.  Full mobilization is expected to begin by the end of the second quarter of 2012 with commercial operation slated to begin by end of 2012.

Power generated at Auwahi will be purchased by the Maui Electric Company under a long term power purchase agreement.

Auwahi will consist of eight Siemens wind turbines and will use a battery storage unit capable of storing in excess of 4 megawatt hours of renewable power, which would help regulate the intermittent wind power to provide grid stability for Maui Electric Company.

Sempra will lead the development of the project and will be in charge of its operations once construction is complete.

The Auwahi Wind farm is the fifth renewable energy project developed by BP and Sempra as part of a
strategic partnership agreement announced in January 2012.

The partnership currently has more than 1,000 megawatts of wind generating capacity in operation or under construction, having completed wind farms in Indiana and Colorado with a total of 450 megawatts, with 611 megawatts more are still under construction in Kansas and Pennsylvania.  – EcoSeed Staff
