A group of experts has just achieved something that until now was thought to be impossible or, at the very least, science fiction. The first hydrogen engine with electric turbocharging is going to revolutionize the roads and overcome one of the most frequent problems of this fuel: autonomy. Imagine the power it could have, but it is another detail that has the experts on tenterhooks.

New hydrogen engine from a brand you wouldn’t expect: maximum power, and soaring range

Ferrari has patented a new three-dimensional hydrogen engine design that has an air injected electric turbocharging system attracting fellow car manufacturers to closely monitor their development. The Italian sports car maker Ferrari recently submitted a patent application outlining a HICE concept for this kind of engine.

Innovativeness of this engine model is so notable because it consumes electrical energy simultaneously with hot exhaust from the turbocharger. It is through hydrogen used as a fuel source that pairs up with electric boosting Ferrari intends to provide high power production and quick response that only emission is of water vapor.

Ferrari’s advanced hydrogen ICE, which employs a combination of electric turbocharger, exemplifies that the company pays so much attention to the development of next-generation powertrains as the foundation of future technologies.

3-liter and 6-cylinder engine: the detail of this hydrogen engine that everyone notices

Beside the key factor, the engine design of Ferrari that got the patent is centered around a 3-liter and 6-cylinder hydrogen engine with combustion. Instead of the common gasoline engines that depend on hydrogen as its fuel source the this type of machine uses.

Hydrogen and oxygen inside the cylinders combust to expel water via reacting in the cylinders. The in-line 6-cylinder architecture in charge of generating a smooth power delivery and a higher efficiency. While the burning of hydrogen generates only water vapour as the waste product, with no emissions of dangerous substances.

Also exclusive to this system will be the substitution of electric turbochargers for mechanical ones. With electric turbocharger, the fine tuning operations of boost pressure are possible by the automotive speed variation of the motor, which is run by electricity.

While hydrogen engines produce higher temps.  and pressure than gasoline engines, they do it within a cycle. Thus, stronger parts have to be used like stainless steel valves or forged aluminum pistons to handle it. Such a combination provides yet another advantage of the increased thermal efficiency.

Could your car carry this Ferrari hydrogen engine? Attention to what the brand says

Although, Ferrari is going to use the hydrogen concept as their power-plant, however, quantity of this technological implementation and the sequel are the question mark, especially when it is about real life use of hydrogen-powered cars.

Currently, there are no following stages after patent, but instead there are many phases of extensive testing, refinement, and huge investments. The hydrogen fuel cell automobile confronts a number of milestones in production, such as high cost structure, safety issue or lack of the infrastructural support.

These factories would need to be subsequently redesigned or constructed to make hydrogen engines available on the market. Ferrari requires a high confidence level of the market demand and rate of return which would influence the production line, mainly on the massive scale.

It is clear that this hydrogen engine with electric turbocharging comes to reaffirm the future of this fuel, which only produces water vapor and reduces polluting emissions to zero. Will we see it soon on the roads? There is still a long way to go to find out, but it does represent another step forward in sustainable mobility and an alternative for those who need vehicles with a high level of autonomy.
