Battery degradation remains one of the biggest questions for anyone considering an electric car. Will the range shrink quickly, or will an expensive battery replacement arrive before the loan is paid off? Real-world evidence from heavily used EVs now gives buyers a clearer answer.
Across large fleet studies, independent long-term tests, and taxis with extreme mileage, capacity loss is usually gradual rather than sudden. The evidence does not promise that every pack will last forever, yet it suggests modern batteries often keep most of their usable energy well past 100,000 miles.
The big datasets
A 2026 analysis of more than 22,700 electric vehicles across 21 makes and models found average capacity loss of 2.3% a year. At that pace, a typical pack would be projected to hold about 81.6% of its original energy after eight years. “EV battery health remains strong, even as vehicles are charged faster and deployed more intensively,” said Charlotte Argue, senior manager for sustainable mobility at Geotab.
A separate field study by P3 and Aviloo examined more than 7,000 EVs, including cars with up to about 186,000 miles. Most measured batteries remained above 80% health after 124,000 miles, and the decline was steepest during roughly the first 18,600 miles before becoming more stable. The researchers also noted that very high-mileage samples are smaller and may favor cars that remained roadworthy, so the trend is encouraging, not a guarantee.
High-mileage cars
Independent testing offers a useful reality check. ADAC ran a Volkswagen ID.3 for about 136,800 miles over five years and measured 89% battery health, even though the car was often charged to 100% and sometimes left sitting full. That is the kind of result that makes a scary odometer reading look different.
The more dramatic examples are individual cases rather than controlled fleet studies. One Model 3 taxi with about 217,500 miles retained 88.5% of its original capacity in an independent diagnostic test, while a British Model S airport car reportedly passed 430,000 miles on its original battery and motors. Outliers cannot predict every owner’s experience, but they show that six-figure mileage does not automatically mean a worn-out pack.
Manufacturer data points in the same direction. Tesla reported that Model 3 and Model Y batteries had lost about 15% of capacity on average after 200,000 miles. Company figures deserve independent comparison, but they broadly match the slower-degradation pattern seen elsewhere.
What battery health means
Battery degradation is the gradual reduction in how much energy a pack can store. A battery’s “state of health” compares its usable capacity today with what it could hold when new, so 85% health means it stores about 85% as much energy under comparable conditions.

In practical terms, a car rated at 300 miles when new and still holding 85% capacity would have about 255 miles under the same test conditions. The number on the dashboard can still move with cold weather, highway speed, cabin heat, hills, or heavy loads. A rough winter road trip is not automatically proof of permanent battery damage.
Charging and chemistry
Charging habits still matter. In the same large fleet analysis, vehicles relying heavily on high-power DC fast charging above 100 kW lost as much as 3.0% capacity per year, compared with about 1.5% for cars using mostly slower charging. Hot climates added about 0.4%age points a year, although charging power had the larger effect.
Battery chemistry changes the picture too. Lithium iron phosphate, usually called LFP, generally favors long cycle life over maximum energy density and is common in many lower-cost EVs. These packs can follow different full-charge routines than nickel-rich batteries, but drivers should use the limit shown by their own vehicle because software, cooling, and pack design vary.
What buyers should check
For a used EV, mileage should be treated as context, not a verdict. AAA advises shoppers to request a battery state-of-health report, confirm any remaining warranty, and compare the fully charged range with the car’s original rating. A dashboard estimate helps, though a dedicated diagnostic test is stronger evidence.
Many new EVs sold in the United States carry battery coverage around eight years or 100,000 miles, often with a minimum capacity threshold. Federal energy guidance says modern packs may last 12 to 15 years in moderate climates, although heat and charging patterns can shorten that window. Ask about the cooling system, charging history, software updates, and any battery repairs before focusing on the odometer alone.
Ultimately, degradation is real, but for the most part it looks like a slow fade rather than a trapdoor. High-mileage EVs can still offer useful range, and a measured battery-health report is the best way to separate a durable used car from a costly gamble.
