After marking their 500th wind turbine installation in Brazil, technology giant G.E. is intent on continuing their dominance in the Brazilian wind sector.
The company has announced that they are pouring additional investments into their Brazilian operations with the expansion of their manufacturing facility in Campinas, Sao Paulo.
With the expansion of the Campinas facility, G.E. hopes to continue to serve the growing Brazilian market by providing high-quality wind energy technology.
Co-located with Brazilian machinery manufacturer and G.E. Group subsidiary GEVISA, the Campinas facility will produce machine heads or nacelles, for G.E.’s 1.7-100 and 1.85-82.5 wind turbines.
The nacelle of a wind turbine is its primary component, housing the power generation equipment such as the gearbox, generator and controls.
The expansion of the manufacturing facility will create 35 new jobs.
“Wind energy is one of Brazil’s fastest growing energy sources,” said Jean-Claude Robert, general manager of Latin America for G.E.’s renewable energy business.
“Last year, the country added 1,077 megawatts of wind to the grid – 40 percent of which were G.E. installations,” added Mr. Robert.
Aside from expanding its manufacturing capacity in Brazil, G.E. will also be opening two wind service centers to provide monitoring and maintenance services for Brazilian wing projects.
The centers will be located in Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte and will employ more than 100 service technicians.
G.E. has been present in Brazil since 1919, employing more than 8,500 people for their operations in Bahia, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
The company installed their 500th wind turbine in Brazil just this September 4. A 1.6 megawatt turbine was installed by G.E. at the Eurus project of DESA in Joao Camara, Rio Grande do Norte
Installing our 500th wind turbine in Brazil is a significant milestone and further deepens the relationship our company has built with this country,” said Mr. Robert.
According to a Navigant Research report on the world wind market, as of 2012, G.E. was the number one installer of wind energy in Brazil with 435 MWs. – EcoSeed Staff
