Philippines houses world’s largest solar-powered mall

According to Interaksyon.com, Solar Philippines, in partnership with SM Malls, launched the solar power facility located at SM North EDSA on November 24.

A mall in the capital city of the Philippines is now sporting a 1.5-megawatt solar panel installation.

The project by Solar Philippines Commercial Rooftop, Inc. is said to be the world’s largest solar-powered shopping mall.

According to Interaksyon.com, Solar Philippines, in partnership with SM Malls, launched the solar power facility located at SM North EDSA on November 24.

Solar Philippines installed 5,760 solar panels and 60 inverters on over 12,000 square meters of the rooftop of the mall’s parking building.

The solar power plant will generate enough power for around 2,000 homes. Power generated will be used to augment the mall’s requirements, lighting up to 16,000 light fixtures, 59 escalators and 20 elevators.

The plant is expected to operate for over 25 years in which time it will offset an estimated 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

Philippine president Benigno S. Aquino III was present during the activation of the solar project along with SM Prime Head, Henry Sy, Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, and Solar Philippines President Leandro Leviste.

According to President Aquino, the project is in line with the Philippine government’s efforts to support renewable energy sources through its Renewable Energy Act.

This is the second mall-based project for Solar Philippines this year, following the installation of a 700-kilowatt facility in Central Mall Binan of Premiumlink Development Corp. in September. – EcoSeed Staff
