How does a country go from being among Europe’s shortest to being known for unusually tall people? In roughly 150 years, Dutch men gained about 20 centimeters (nearly 8 inches), a populationwide shift that researchers have linked largely to better living conditions.
The striking part is not simply that later generations grew taller. Research points to nutrition, child health, and hygiene as major contributors, while a 2023 simulation found that natural selection could explain only a tiny fraction of the increase.
Nearly 8 inches, one generation at a time
In the mid-19th century, a Dutch army recruit averaged about 165 centimeters, or 5 feet 5 inches. Those historical measurements put the country far from the towering image associated with it today.
For a modern comparison, Statistics Netherlands reported that men born in the country in 2001 averaged 182.9 centimeters (about 6 feet) at age 19. Women from the same birth year averaged 169.3 centimeters (about 5 feet 7 inches), according to its 2022 national overview.
This was not a case of adults suddenly shooting upward. The long-term change emerged as successive generations grew up under different conditions, making the national height record a window into childhood rather than a snapshot of one unusually prosperous year. Think of the pencil marks on a kitchen doorframe, repeated across millions of families.
Better food and healthier childhoods
A study published in Pediatric Research in 2000 compared four nationwide Dutch growth studies covering 1955 through 1997. Its newest survey included measurements from 14,500 children and young people, giving researchers a substantial foundation for examining how growth had changed. Their analysis found continued increases, although the pace had slowed during the final 17 years.
The authors identified “improved nutrition, child health, and hygiene, and a reduction of family size” as possible contributors. They also found that differences associated with region, education, and family size remained, even while the population grew taller overall.
That matters because a rising national average does not mean every household benefited equally. The findings suggest that the conditions surrounding children, not just the food on any one dinner plate, belong in the explanation.
What happened to the evolution explanation?
In 2015, research published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that taller Dutch men tended to have more children. That raised an intriguing possibility, with reproductive differences potentially making height-associated genetic variants more common over generations.
But how much height could that process actually add? In 2023, Gert Stulp and colleagues modeled the question using estimates of partnership, mortality, selection, and heritability, finding that natural selection could account for only 0.07 to 0.36 centimeters between 1850 and 2000.
These are modeled estimates, not direct measurements of genetic change across every generation. Even the upper estimate is less than 2% of a 20-centimeter increase, making natural selection a minor contributor under the tested assumptions.
The environment leaves its mark on growth
Genes still strongly influence how tall someone becomes, but they do not work in isolation. MedlinePlus, a resource of the National Library of Medicine, explains that childhood nutrition, infectious disease, and access to health care also influence adult height.
The process begins even before birth, with maternal nutrition and environmental exposures among the factors that can affect growth. Later, a well-nourished child with adequate health care has a better chance of realizing their growth potential than a child facing poor nutrition and repeated illness. That helps explain how average height can change when growing conditions improve across generations.
Seen this way, average height can serve as a physical record of the circumstances in which generations grew up. That makes it a useful population clue, not a diagnosis of any one person’s childhood or a reason to assume that a shorter person is unhealthy.
The Dutch growth spurt has limits
The official figures also complicate the idea that each Dutch generation inevitably becomes taller. Statistics Netherlands reported that men born in 2001 averaged 1 centimeter less at age 19 than those born in 1980, while the difference for women was 1.4 centimeters.
Those comparisons deserve attention, but they do not identify a cause on their own. Given the multiple influences on height, a leveling off or decline can prompt questions about childhood conditions without proving that nutrition or health care has deteriorated.
The more useful takeaway is not a target on a growth chart, but the importance of giving children reliable access to nutritious food and care.
