File before this deadline, and you can share in the benefits of a class action lawsuit. Class action lawsuits are litigations that are usually brought against a large entity, though it can be against an individual, by a group of plaintiffs as opposed to one person bringing a lawsuit against a defendant. These lawsuits are filed when a legal violation by the defendant affects multiple people, as opposed to a single person. Plaintiff groups can be as large as hundreds of individuals seeking legal justice for a legal violation.

Class action lawsuits are on the rise

In an age of digitization, class action lawsuits have become increasingly more prevalent in the wake of privacy law violations and data breaches. A major responsibility large entities have today is storing client data, ensuring that it remains secure and not subject to cybercrime, which has become both more common and more advanced. If you are an entity that keeps sensitive client data such as banking details and Social Security numbers, you need to take every precaution possible to ensure that this data does not become compromised by unauthorized third parties.

Other responsibilities these entities have are being completely transparent with their clients regarding how their data is being used. Companies can face severe legal repercussions if it is found that they are intentionally selling their clients’ data to third parties without first gaining consent from their clients and users to do so or processing information from their clients that is not required for the services that they offer.

When a company is found engaging in illegal practices such as selling its client data or has not taken the necessary steps to maximize the security of client information to prevent it from being compromised, a class action lawsuit is at risk of coming their way. Plaintiffs may choose to submit a class action lawsuit over pursuing legal action individually, as it not only means that their combined resources are pooled, but also brings increased publicity to a litigation case, especially if the defendant is a well-known entity that needs to be held accountable.

File before this deadline and receive $150

Recently, video streaming service Viki has agreed to settle an $8 million class action lawsuit with plaintiffs, whereby plaintiffs alleged that the streaming service violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by sharing user data with Facebook. This law prohibits streaming services from sharing their client user information that could identify a consumer and their video-watching history without first consulting with the user.

The terms of the settlement are:

  • Eligible class members can receive between $150-$300 in compensation from Viki, depending on how many users claim.
  • Viki will no longer use Meta Pixel web tracking tool unless it receives consent from users to track their video content history.

Before compensation can be paid out, plaintiffs must file any exclusions or objections to these terms and their claim before September 22.

$5,000 in compensation for these users

Earlier this month was the last chance for plaintiffs of the Lake Charles Memorial Health litigation case to submit their claim to receive compensation of up to $5,000 from Lake Charles Memorial Health to make up for the expenses incurred from a data breach in 2022, where sensitive data stored by the Hospital was exposed to unauthorized third-party entities.

While the deadline to submit your claim to receive compensation was September 5, the final approval hearing is scheduled for November 3, before plaintiffs can receive compensation. Both these cases are examples of how the public can continue to hold powerful entities accountable when digital privacy laws are violated. Disclaimer: You should not submit false or inflated claims under penalty of perjury, as class‑action claim forms historically required declarations signed “under penalty of perjury” to ensure authenticity. Submitting a fraudulent claim not only carries legal exposure—including potential civil and criminal sanctions—but also harms other eligible class members by diluting the available settlement pool.
